Thinking About Our Eternal Future

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore. Continue reading

A Passage to Ponder: Romans 12

In the first century, there were basically two views of the human body. One was that it should be worshiped for its beauty and idolized for its strength. The body was something to be proud of and to flaunt.

On the other hand, some believed that the body was inherently sinful. That the body didn’t matter. Only the spirit mattered. In fact, the body was just a shackle and a prison house. It was something to be despised and ashamed of. Continue reading

Sin: The Greatest Problem of Mankind

My friend and preaching colleague, Wilson Adams called it “Symptomatology.” I thought he made it up. But it’s a real word. A medical word. But Wilson defined it as “treating symptoms instead of the real problem.”

“Truth is,” Wilson wrote in a recent facebook post, “we are becoming quite numb to school, church, and public killings. Immersed in a culture of violence, we are witnessing a lost generation without conscience moorings.”

“Why?” He asks. Continue reading

Beware: A Liar is on the Loose

We’re all familiar with the Biblical metaphors and descriptions of the devil.

The dragon.

Roaring lion.

Old serpent.

Prince of Darkness.

Your adversary. Continue reading

What Have We Come To?

 Vegas

“What have we come to?” asks Dee Bowman in his June column from Pressing On Magazine.

To cite his concerns, Dee shares the following examples from our sin-sick society.

  • I saw a commercial that advertises a place that has “just the right amount of wrong.” What have we come to? Continue reading

Navigating Obstacles on Life’s Journey

traffic backup

Yesterday was our first road trip since moving to the Lone Star state three weeks ago. And what a trip is was!

We left our home in Corinth, north of Dallas, about 9:15 on what should have been about a 5 hour drive with time to stop for lunch. We arrived 8 hours later.

The 30 mile obstacle course through Dallas, called I-35, is proving to be a daily adventure. Constant construction. Narrow lanes. Closed exits. Sudden stops. Rough pavement. Difficult to read signs. And, of course, always a crazy driver weaving in and out of traffic. These are to be expected as par for the course. Continue reading

“This is not a day care. This is a university!” These words in a post by Dr. Everett Piper, President of Oklahoma Wesleyan University, went viral last week and were reported by most of the media.

Dr. Piper’s post was in response to a student complaint that he was “offended” by a speaker on the campus with whom he disagreed. What was not widely reported by most outlets was the situation that caused the student’s discomfort.

Here it is and the commentary in Dr. Piper’s own words. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Hebrews 11:6

 Hebrews 11.6

In Living Above the Level of Mediocrity, Chuck Swindoll poses this scenario.

Imagine, if you will, that you work for a company whose president found it necessary to travel out of the country and spend an extended period of time abroad. So he says to you and the other trusted employees, “Look, I’m going to leave. And while I’m gone, I want you to pay close attention to the business. You manage things while I’m away. I will write you regularly. When I do, I will instruct you in what you should do from now until I return from this trip.” Everyone agrees. Continue reading

WORD OF THE WEEK: PREACHING

Preaching.Word WeekThe story is over 50 years old. But so am I! And it continues to make a good point. Supposedly it began with a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.

“Dear Editor:
I notice that ministers seem to set a great deal of importance on their sermons and spend a great deal of time in preparing them. I have been attending services quite regularly for the past thirty years and during that time, if I estimate correctly, I have listened to no less than 3,000 sermons, but, to my consternation, I discover I cannot remember a single one of them. I wonder if a minister’s time might be more profitably spent on something else?

Sincerely….”

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Oh, What a Savior!

Dee BowmanNext week I will be Pasadena,Texas, speaking at the Southside Lectures. Today’s post for this weekly column is taken from Southside Online and written by one of their evangelists, my friend, Dee Bowman.)

There has never been one like Jesus. In all the annals of history no entry has been made which compares to His. He was born of a peasant woman and His early family life gave only slight hints as to the greatness of His holy character or the importance of His mission on the earth. The lack of earthly possessions must certainly have convinced those who knew Him that His lot in life was not too far removed from theirs and that entirely too much would need be required for His influence to spread further than would be expected of any other carpenter’s son. Continue reading
