Commandment Keeping: Legalism or Love?

I recently read a story about a woman whose husband was a demanding and dictatorial man.

After they married, he compiled a written list of demands. Duties he expected of her. She was to wake up at a certain time. Fix his breakfast. Pack his lunch for work. Faith: The Challenge To Obey

Today is the fourth day of our VBS at Wellandport. The week’s focus is on faith. And today’s lesson is about obedience. The character for our consideration is the prophet, Jonah.

Jonah is an unusual prophet. Like the other prophets, the book begins by saying, ”Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah…” However, he is not called to preach to Israel, but to go to the Assyrian city of Nineveh. While other prophets proclaimed judgments against foreign nations, only Jonah is called to preach directly to another nation. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Obey

Little.Boy.ChairThere was a rambunctious little boy who was always getting into trouble.  One particular day when his Mother was trying to get some house work finished, he was into everything.  Undoing what she has done.  Causing havoc.  And generally getting on her nerves.

Finally she said, go sit down in that chair in the corner and be quiet!  He looked at her defiantly and said, “No.”  Well, that did it.  She picked up.  Took him to the chair.  Sit him down with some authority.  And said firmly, “You stay in the chair, until I tell you get up, or you’re going to get a whipping!” Continue reading
