The Vision of Faith

In 1959 Walt Disney began looking for land to build a second resort to complement his Anaheim, California, park. Supposedly he was not happy with the many businesses that sprung up around Disneyland and wanted enough land to control the development around his next park.

It wasn’t until 1963 that Disney flew over the Orlando, Florida, area and finally decided on this location. The process of acquiring the land and building the park took 9 years. Disney died in 1966 before The Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Continue reading

Theme for 2020

During the last number of years when I was engaged in full-time local church work, we had an annual theme that we focused on for the year. We built our sermons and classes around that general theme. It was a spiritual challenge to the congregation to zero in on a single idea.

Although we’re now engaged in an international itinerant ministry, I’ve decided to make this my theme for the year–2020 Vision: Restoring Our Focus. It’s a personal pursuit. One that I will be blogging about on ThePreachersWord. And as I have opportunity it’s a theme I want to share as we visit various congregations. Continue reading

“I Was Blind But Now I See”

For the past two weeks, Norma Jean and I have enjoyed seeing the beautiful Fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains. During our time here, the landscape has changed right before our eyes. It’s an incredible sight.

“I promise if you hire me I will do everything within my power to bring this church into the 20th century,” the preacher replied.

Sheepishly, after a thoughtful pause, one member raised their hand and said, “Preacher, you mean the 21st century, don’t you?” Continue reading

Seeing What Jesus Saw

“Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be” wrote American author Robert A. Heinlein. Continue reading

Open Your Eyes

“Eyes that look are common; eyes that see are rare,” wrote J. Oswald Sanders in his book Spiritual Leadership.

Sanders’ words speak to the ability to see below the surface. To look beyond the obvious. To view with insight and understanding. To really see things in this manner requires perception. Recognition. And discernment. Continue reading

Vision, Investment and Your Future

It was on this day 11 years ago that Steve Jobs stood before the Macworld convention in San Francisco dressed in his customary jeans and black mock turtleneck and introduced the iPhone.

Jobs said the iPhone was “revolutionary” and a “magical product” that was “literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone.” The iPhone and Steve Jobs’ visionary leadership turned Apple into one of the most valuable corporations in the world. Continue reading
