Last Saturday while returning from Nashville to Dallas on Southwest airlines, I picked up a copy of their magazine and saw a headline that caught my eye “The Ultimate Team Sport” by their Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly.
In the article, Kelly was comparing Southwest to a football team. In it he talked about the value of every team member, sticking together through wins and losses and how to treat others on the team. Continue reading

My meeting in Grayson County Kentucky followed by a couple days in the mountains has put me in a reflective mood. So, here are some thoughts from a column 4 years ago that seem appropriate today.
For as long as I can recall, going back to my childhood days, ingrained in my memory is the period of worship when we partake of the Lord’s supper.
I remember the solemnity of the occasion before I totally understood what it meant. A song was sung “to prepare our minds.” The men would go forward in suits and ties. The one presiding would often read from I Corinthians 11 or one of the gospel accounts where Jesus instituted the supper. Then make a few appropriate remarks.

A Pew Research Center Poll revealed that for the first time a majority of Americans say it is possible to be a good person without religious beliefs.
The poll conducted in June and July surveyed 5,000 American adults and found that 56% said that “God is not a prerequisite for good values and morality,” according to Greg Smith, Pew’s associate director of research. Smith attributed this response to the increased number of Americans who are religious “nones,” that is they have no religious affiliation. Continue reading
An Indiana preacher, Fred Sigle, tells an incredible story that occurred in the lower east side of NYC several years ago.
Two teenagers with a long history of crime and delinquency robbed a YMCA and as they were leaving saw a young man at the telephone switchboard. They were frightened and assumed that he must be calling the police. They seized and beat him savagely with brass knuckles and a blackjack. Thinking that he was dead, they hid him behind a radiator near the swimming pool and escaped. Continue reading

Yesterday I caught just a bit of the Today Show and a segment they’re doing on happiness. They were interviewing an author whose name I missed and then revealed the happiest places in the world.
The author said there were 3 factors to happiness. (1) How much pleasure you have in your life. (2) How much pride you have in your life? (3) If you’re fulfilling your purpose in life. Continue reading
“A basic mark of true spirituality is a deep awareness of sin,” once wrote author John MacArthur.
“In Scripture,” MacArthur observed, “those who most despised their sinfulness were often those who were the most spiritual. Paul said he was the chief of sinners. Peter said to Jesus, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.” Isaiah said, “Woe is me, because I am a man of unclean lips.” Spiritual people realize they are in a death struggle with sin.” Continue reading

Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood mogul, and successful independent film producer, has been headline news this past week.
The New York Times published a story detailing accounts of multiple sexual-harassment allegations against Weinstein over several decades. Three women have accused him of rape.
In response, Weinstein announced that he would be taking a leave of absence to enter rehab and receive counseling to deal with his behavior. He released a bizarre statement, a supposed apology, explaining his actions. Continue reading

David McCasland tells a story about a United States Army general speaking in Japan told who a joke with the punch line, “Show me. I’m from Missouri.”
His translator knew the audience wouldn’t understand, so he said in Japanese, “The general has made a joke and I’ll be in trouble if you don’t laugh.” Continue reading
Several years ago Time Magazine featured a story about the British actor Peter Sellers, who was famous for his role as the bumbling Chief Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies.
Once Sellers appeared on the Muppet Show and was being interviewed by Kermit The Frog. As the interview began, Kermit said to Sellers, “Now, just relax and be yourself.” Continue reading

Shannon Johnson Kershner, a Waco, Texas native, and leader of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois, has declared that Christianity is not the only way to heaven.
In a recent podcast with the Chicago Sun-Times, Kershner was specifically asked, “Is Christianity the only way to heaven?”
