Is There A God?

On Tuesday a book by Physicist Stephen Hawking was released entitled, Brief Answers to Big Questions. This posthumous work (Hawking died last March) covers many major issues including his disbelief in God.

According to CNN the book was not finished when he died so his family and friends used his notes to complete it.

“Do I have faith?” Hawking writes. “We are each free to believe what we want, and it’s my view that the simplest explanation is that there is no God. No one created the universe, and no one directs our fate.” Continue reading

Attributes of God From A-Z

Yesterday, as Norma Jean and I toured the National Museum of Archaeology  in Athens and viewed the artifacts of the great thinkers and philosophers of Greece and Rome, it occurred to me that with all their intellectual acumen, most did not truly know Jehovah God.

Yesterday’s post discussed Paul’s sermon revealing to the Epicureans and Stoics “The Unknown God” as Jehovah God. Many mocked the apostle’s message. Regardless, God has revealed Himself to us. Continue reading

The Moon Proclaims God’s Glory

It happened 49 years ago today, on a Sunday evening, July 20, 1969. I will never forget it. Norma Jean and I returned to our little apartment on Bearss Avenue in Tampa, Florida, after preaching out of town that day.

We got home just in time. Turned on our little black and white TV and watched in amazement. At 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from earth, stepped off the lunar landing module Eagle and uttered those famous words heard by more than a billion people: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Armstrong had become the first human being to walk on the surface of the moon. Continue reading

Atheist Stephen Hawking is Dead

Stephen Hawking, the renown physicist, and avowed atheist died Wednesday.

Hawking, who was 76, wasn’t expected to live past age 25. When he was 21 he was diagnosed with ALS, the incurable neurodegenerative disease. Although he beat the odds for more than 50 years he once said that he “lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years,” Continue reading

Reviving Our Passion For God

New Yorker Roger Pasquier has an unusual hobby. The retired ornithologist has a keen eye for spotting dropped coins.

Since he began this strange hobby late in 1980’s Pasquier has found almost $2,000 worth of coins dropped on the New York City’s sidewalks.

In recent years he has developed some specific strategies to help him find and keep track of the coins he collects. He avoids eye contact with other pedestrians. He hovers outside of bars where careless drunk people drop money. Continue reading

Can You Be Good Without God?

A Pew Research Center Poll revealed that for the first time a majority of Americans say it is possible to be a good person without religious beliefs.

The poll conducted in June and July surveyed 5,000 American adults and found that 56% said that “God is not a prerequisite for good values and morality,” according to Greg Smith, Pew’s associate director of research. Smith attributed this response to the increased number of Americans who are religious “nones,” that is they have no religious affiliation. Continue reading

Does God Have A Sense of Humor?

Giraffe

Several years ago Dr. Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertforshire in England did a serious study to determine the world’s funniest joke.  Over 40,000 jokes were submitted.  Rated.  And judged.

The experiment demonstrated that people in different parts of the world have varying tastes in humor.  Americans like jokes with a character who’s made to look stupid.  New Zealanders, Australians and Brits prefer jokes involving word play.  Germans had no preference in jokes.

But, here’s  the joke that won first place regardless of gender, geography or age. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 19:1-2

This morning when I turned on my computer, this random screen saver appeared, pictured above. The caption reads: “You’re looking at a spiral galaxy containing upwards of 400 billion stars and 100 billion planets. Ahhh….”

Immediately my mind went to one of the great verses of the Bible, Psalm 19:1-2. “The heavens declare the glory of God, And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.” Continue reading

5 Passion Killers That Destroy Your Passion For God

Last night it was my pleasure to be with my friends Mark and Judy Broyles and the brethren in Bulverde, Texas, to speak at their summer lecture series. Their theme has been “Our Passion for Spiritual Growth.” And my topic was “Passionate about God.”

“It certainly is mysterious, this word passion,” writes Gordon MacDonald in his excellent book Renewing Your Spiritual Passion. “It is hard to measure and difficult to pin down. But you know when you have it, and you are quite aware when you don’t. Continue reading
