Made For Another World

World.Gazing

Last night I woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep. So I got up, ate a piece of toast and drank a glass of warm milk. (I read somewhere on the internet where that would help you sleep. So it must be true!)

After checking my email, which you’re not supposed to do, I decided to read for a while. I picked up a book and came across two great quotes, one by John Piper and the other by C. S. Lewis.

Piper wrote, “The greatest hindrance to worship is not that we are a pleasure-seeking people, but that we are willing to settle for such pitiful pleasures.” Continue reading

What Will Your Obituary Say About You?

 alfrednobel-1024x576

One morning in April of 1888 Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, woke up to read his own obituary.

His brother, Ludvig, had died. But a newspaper reporter mistakenly thought it was Alfred and carelessly reported the death of the wrong brother! Anyone would be disturbed under those circumstances to read their own obituary. However, the headline was even more disconcerting to Nobel. It read:  Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE John 10:10

John-10-10

In an old “Peanuts” cartoon, Lucy is talking to her baby brother, Linus. The scenario unfolds like this.

Lucy: ’I’ll tell you something I’ve never told anyone before.

She points to a hill in the distance and says, ’Someday, I’m going over that hill and find happiness and fulfilment. For me all the answers to life lie beyond those clouds and over the grassy slopes of those hills.

Linus: (Removes his thumb from his mouth, points toward the hill, Maybe there’s another little kid on the other side of the hill who is looking this way and thinks that all the answers lie on this side of the hill. Continue reading

Six Lessons From An Icy Road

IcyRoadKC

Sunday evening on the way to worship service, I noticed a light mist on my car’s windshield.  We had a skiff of snow early Sunday morning.  So, I wondered out loud, “Is that a spray from the cars in front of me?”  Or is that sleet?”

On the way home, we found out. Continue reading

Three Keys To Success

DianaNyad

I’ve tried and failed.  Several times.  So why try again?

I’m too old now.  If I was younger, I might.  But, I’m past my prime.

And besides, I can’t do it myself.  And I doubt anyone would want to help me.

These three excuses have kept more people from trying, more people from succeeding, and more people from a richly rewarding life than we can ever imagine.

Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way.  Just ask Diana Nyad.  Continue reading

Don’t Just Sit There. Do Something!

Baloons.LarryWalters2

Larry’s boyhood dream was to fly.  After graduating from high school he joined the air force.  But poor eyesight disqualified him from flying.  When he was discharged, he had to be content just to watch the Jets fly over his Long Beach CA neighborhood.  Then one day the 33-year-old truck driver got a “bright idea!” Continue reading

Life Lessons From The Oklahoma Tornado

MooreOK

Amazing. Incredible.  Captivating.  Those words don’t begin to describe the scene yesterday afternoon when I turned on Fox News and saw the powerful Tornado moving across the Oklahoma plains.  I was watching it live as it was filmed from a helicopter.  You could see flashes of light from the distance as it evidently took down power-lines.  But it was coming across open land.  Maybe it would lift up.  Dissipate.  Move on.  And not strike a populated area.  Continue reading

9 Words to Direct Your Life

Psalm119How are you going to live your life?  What is the basis?  The foundation? The standard?  What are your values?  Your morals?  Your ethics?  If there is not some basis, life becomes confusing and aimless.

The Psalmist said Ps 119:133  “Direct my steps by Your  word,  And let no iniquity have dominion over me.”

Psalm 119 provides valuable insight to living a holy life.  A happy life. A successful life.  Psalm 119 is unique.  It has 22 stanzas with 8 lines each.  It is an acrostic using the Hebrew alphabet and each line begins with the same letter.

Nine synonyms are used for God’s Word that not only highlight its value, but demonstrate how it can direct my life.  Think about these 9 words and how they speak to you. Continue reading

Finding Comfort in Times of Chaos

BostonMarathonBombingThis has been a rough week for Americans.  A chaotic week.  An unnerving week.

First the terrorist bombing at the finish line of the world-famous Boston Marathon. Thankfully the two men who perpetrated these attacks have been caught.  But in the wake of this assault they have left death, destruction and devastation.  Families grieve the loss of loved ones.  People are suffering.  The aftermath will be felt for years to come. For some the rest of their lives. Hurt.  Heartache.  Anguish.  Continue reading

Rekindling Spiritual Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm.SpiritualLast night Norma Jean I joined 74,326 pumped-up fans  who watched the championship game of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament between Louisville and Michigan.  Well, not from the Georgia Dome!  But from our home.

The game was exciting.  Both teams played with passion.  The fans were boisterous. The coaches were high-spirited.  The announcers were exuberant.  The game and everything around it could be described in one word “enthusiastic”!

Yet none of this mattered.   At least that’s what Dr. Keith Ablow  said on Meghan Kelly’s  American Live yesterday on Fox News.   Continue reading
