Word of the Week: Success

Success.Word

A number of years ago Harvard University asked its graduating 1100 Seniors “Is success a destination or a journey?”

930 said it was a destination. They thought it was something you could measure when you had enough money, or achieved a certain fame or position.

What is success? How would you define it? Measure it? Quantify it? Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Remembering A Day of Evil

Remember.Day

Yesterday was the 13th anniversary of 911.

It was a day of personal remembrance. Solemn reflection.  And national introspection.

We all remember where we were and what we were doing on that day of infamy.  Many of us know someone who was directly affected, killed, or either by chance or God’s grace missed being on one of those flights or in the twin towers.  And, as Americans we wonder “Are we safer today than we were 13 years ago?” Continue reading

Facing Life With Faith

Faith.GotFaith

Contemporary author Eugene Peterson once wrote, “Christian faith is not neurotic dependence, but childlike trust.  We do not have a God who forever indulges our whims but a God in whom we trust with our destinies.”

Our confidence in God provides peace of mind, purpose in life, and hope for the future.  As Corrie Ten Boom put it, “Faith is like a radar that sees through the fog of reality of things at a distance that the human eye cannot see.  Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible.” Continue reading

Darrel Pace  was a world champion Archer. He won four consecutive world championships from 1973 through 1976 and Olympic gold medals in 1976 and 1984.

One time Pace put on  an archery exhibition in Central Park.  TV reporters gathered  to watch him shoot steel-tipped hunting arrows with flawless accuracy.

At one point Pace asked for a volunteer. “All you have to do,” Darrel explained, “is hold this apple in your hand, waist-high.”  ABC correspondent, Josh Howell,  boldly stepped forward to volunteer. Continue reading

Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, playwright, and novelist.  He is credited with a quote that has become a part of the public domain.

Word of the Week: Faith

Faith.Word

One night a family’s house caught fire and they were forced to run outside. However, the fire blocked their path to the upstairs bedroom where their son was sleeping. The father yelled for the son to open his bedroom window.

On the ground below the boy’s father he knew his son had to jump to save his life. “Jump!” hollered the frantic father, “Jump, I’ll catch you!”

All the frightened little fellow could see, however, was smoke, flames and the darkness of the night. He was scared to jump. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When Death is Gain

Cross.Tomb.Darkness.Light

There is a great scene in The Fisherman’s Lady by Scottish author, poet and preacher, George MacDonald.  Malcolm, the fisherman, and his friend, the schoolmaster, are sitting in a graveyard following the death of a local woman and discussing dying.

“But, sir, isn’t death a dreadful thing?” asked Malcolm. Continue reading

It’s Time To Declare War!

War.SpiritualArmor

Last night in an impassioned Talking Points memo, Fox News Commentator, Bill O’Reilly, said it is time to declare war on ISIS and other Muslim terrorist groups.

Following the public beheading of two American journalists, James Foley and Steven Sotloff, O’Reilly called for Congress to formally declare war on Islamic terrorists and for the President to sign it

There can be no doubt that ISIS and those of their ilk are at war with us. In a recent video one of their soldiers looked into the camera and sneered “I say to America that the Islamic Caliphate has been established. And we will not stop… we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House.” Continue reading

A Constructive Observation

Digital Image by Sean Locke Digital Planet Design www.digitalplanetdesign.com

ThePreachersWord recently received an email from a regular reader, a friend and Christian sister.

We always enjoy getting responses from our readers. And it’s a special pleasure to hear from old friends. With a friendly greeting, “Hello Brother” her first line began, “I want to tell you how much I enjoy your thoughts and words of encouragement posted on your blog…”

But I knew there was more. This was going to be a special message. A personal message. Something with substance.

I knew it because of the subject line on the email. Two words: Continue reading
