The Psalmist prophesied it. Jesus predicted it would happen. Within hours. Peter emphatically denied it could ever occur. And so nodded all the disciples in agreement. They would never do that! Do what? Continue reading

What’s the Difference Between Responsibility and Accountability?
I’m working on a three-part series called “The Character of a Man.” I began listing words that had to do with character to see if I could make the series into an acrostic spelling C H A R A C T E R. (I know that’s a big surprise to those who know me well!)
I was trying to decide between“responsibility” and “accountability.” As I was talking to my wife, Norma Jean, about the project, she said, “You know, there’s a difference between accountability and responsibility?” Continue reading

What’s It All About? Why Are You Here?
Michael and Mary were driving home after purchasing a new luxury car. As they rode along, Mary said, “You know, Michael , if it weren’t for my money, we probably wouldn’t have this new car.” Michael just drove and didn’t say a word.
As they drove up the lane admiring their beautiful new custom home, Mary remarked, “You know, Michael, if it weren’t for my money, we probably wouldn’t have this new home.” Again, Michael was silent. Continue reading

Sail On!
Today is Columbus Day. It is a day that Americans celebrate the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Some say that America was really discovered by Norse Vikings, Irish missionaries or the ten lost tribes of Israel! But the fact is Columbus was successful in his quest and returned to the old World to spread the good news. Continue reading

Upon The First Day of the Week
With such an emphasis today on the “week-end” as a time for travel, recreation, or sporting events it is easy to forget that Sunday is the first day of the week.
It is a unique day in history. It is a day sanctified in Scripture. It is a day special to all Christians. Continue reading

Bonus October Blogs from ThePreachersWord
Those who are regular readers know that I post 5 days a week—Monday-Friday. However, this month I am participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge. The challenge for bloggers is to post something every day in the month of October.
My plan is to use Saturday to share a little humorous story with a short, simple moral to it. And on Sunday to post a seed thought pertaining to the Lord’s Day.
So, to start, here’s one of my favorite stories….. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When Life Feels Futile
Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher once lamented, “I feel as if I were a piece in a game of chess, when my opponent says of it: That piece cannot be moved.”
The 17th century author and theologian, Thomas Fuller, lamented, “We are born crying, live complaining and die disappointed.”
“Youth is a blunder, manhood a struggle, and old age a regret.” Opined the 19th century British statesman and Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. Continue reading

“I’m Not Perfect”
Have you seen former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his media tour promoting his new book? “Total Recall: My Unbelievable True Life Story” is mainly about his success as a world-champion bodybuilder, a Hollywood box-office heavyweight, and two-term Governor of California.
One chapter, called “The Secret,” is devoted to his affair with their housekeeper that produced an out-of-wedlock son, who was five years old when he ran for govenor. Continue reading
What’s The Heart of the Matter?
On Jason’s first day of school, the class was asked to stand, place their right hand over their heart and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
The teacher, Mrs Jones, watched the children as they began, “I pledge allegiance to the flag….” when she noticed Jason had his right hand over his left ear. She stopped and said, “Jason, put your hand over your heart.”
Jason replied, “It is over my heart!”
After repeated attempts failed to get Jason to put his hand over his heart, Mrs Jones asked, “Why do you think that is your heart?” Continue reading
