Michael and Mary were driving home after purchasing a new luxury car. As they rode along, Mary said, “You know, Michael , if it weren’t for my money, we probably wouldn’t have this new car.” Michael just drove and didn’t say a word.
As they drove up the lane admiring their beautiful new custom home, Mary remarked, “You know, Michael, if it weren’t for my money, we probably wouldn’t have this new home.” Again, Michael was silent.
Once more it happened. As they relaxed in their family room, enjoying watching a movie on their big screen TV, Mary turned to Michael and said, “If it weren’t for my money, we probably wouldn’t have this huge entertainment center.”
Finally, Michael had enough. He turned to Mary and said, “I don’t want to hurt your feelings, honey, but you know if it weren’t for your money, I probably wouldn’t be here either.”
Well, if it weren’t for God, you and I wouldn’t be here!
We often wonder what’s life all about? Why work? Have a family? Go to church? What are we to be doing? What’s the purpose of it all?
Actually the answer to these questions is all the same. It’s all about God.
Why does the cosmos exist? “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Ps 19:1). The sun. The moon. The stars. The beautiful world in which we live. They all reveal God’s eternal power and divine nature. His majesty. His goodness. His greatness. It’s all because of Him.
What about our families? Paul tells husbands they are to love their wives “as Christ loved the church.” Likewise wives are to “submit to their own husbands in the Lord.” And children are to ““obey their parents in the Lord.” (Col 3:18-21) It’s all about the Lord. Glorifying him in our homes. Honoring him. Living and loving sacrificially, obediently, and unselfishly.
What is the purpose of the church? We are called “to be to the praise of His glory and to give Him glory in the church (Eph 1:18; 3:21). You see, the church is not about us. It’s all Him. It exists because of His eternal plan and purpose. And as members of this spiritual family, we are to here to offer Him praise. Honor. Glory.
Why do we work? To honor the Lord. Yes we “work as unto Christ” (Eph 6:5). Honest and honorable labor glorifies God. Business success is not for our own selfish gratification. It’s to be able to serve God. Help others. Provide for our families. And our resulting blessings are because of Him.
Even in our death we glorify God. Paul said “if we live, we live unto the Lord and if we die, we die unto the Lord” (Rom 14:8). You mean, we die because of God? The Hebrew writer said, “It is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgment.” Although we tend to view death as something bad, God uses this change to give us a better body. A better home. A better life. Death is a transition that has the potential to glorify Him.
And so, this day. This hour. This moment. Is not about us—our enjoyment, our desires, our pleasure. It’s all about Him. The Psalmist declared “this is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Have a great day! Just remember, it’s all about Him.

Great thoughts! Let me add, while from our perspective it is all about God; from His perspective, it’s all about us. Some have asked me in all seriousness if God has an ego problem, always demanding that we praise Him, etc. There’s sure a lot to say about such a question. But, the fact is that our worship and praise and service to God does not benefit Him, but us. It’s all about us.

Good points, Ken! I agree. In fact, that wasmy focus in the Sept 10th post People Matter. https://thepreachersword.com/2012/09/10/people-matter/ Just depends which perspective you’re looking at it!
