Jesus’ Warning Regarding Greed

Yesterday we enjoyed driving around The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although it was a little cool, we stopped for some short walks on trails. It was a very pleasant and relaxing day.

One thing you soon notice in the park is the various warning signs. There are trail advisories. Warnings against feeding the bears. The danger of biking down steep grades. The probation of climbing rocks in certain areas. There was even a caution to watch for possible snow and ice. Continue reading

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

“Often we allow ourselves to get all worked up about things that upon closer examination aren’t really that big a deal,” wrote Dr. Richard Carlson in his classic little book entitled Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.

Carlson illustrates how we may “focus on little problems and concerns and blow them way out of proportion. A stranger, for example, might cut in front of us in traffic. Rather than let it go, and go on with our day, we convince ourselves that we are justified in our anger.”

There are so many little things that can divert our attention from the bigger, more important issues of life. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Luke 9:62

Leroy “Satchel”  Paige, was a great African-American baseball pitcher who played in the early to mid-1900’s. Paige, who played before blacks were allowed in the major leagues, is credited for paving the way.

Paige was a showman, a legend in his own time and an incredible athlete who defied age. No one ever knew for sure how old he was, it’s believed he was the oldest rookie in the Majors when he signed with the Cleveland Indians at age 42 in 1948.

Cross. Blood Stained

“I used to think it strange that the Bible keeps talking about the cleansing power of the blood,” admitted the late and renowned surgeon Paul W. Brand.

“It seemed to me that blood was messy stuff. I needed to wash my white lab coats if they became stained with blood,” wrote Dr. Brand in his book God’s Forever Feast. “Today, I love the analogy; it is so true of the body. The blood is constantly cleansing every cell, and washing away all the debris that accumulates all the time. I like Paul’s phrase in Hebrews.3 ‘How much more shall the blood of Christ purge [cleanse] your conscience from dead works?”
