IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Jesus is Lord of Lords!

From April 2012 through December 2015, we published a weekly column, “It’s Friday. But Sunday’s Coming.” Since we have so many new readers from those earlier days, we wanted to introduce the column to you. There are 166 posts filed in the category section under this heading. They can be used for Lord’s Supper talks, bulletin articles or reblogged by WordPress users. Each of them points us to cross and remind us Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.

Jesus.Names.2

Melvin Newland, the preacher for the Ridge Chapel Church in Kansas, OK, tells an incredible story of a lady who attended a Sunday service.

The lady, a former member 25 years earlier, was visiting a friend in the Ridge and decided to attend services that morning. However, following the worship she approached Melvin and angrily informed him she was not happy with the service.

“Why?” asked Newland.

When I saw the headline “The Hottest Thing at Church Today,” I wondered what kind of new promotion or gimmick some mega church had devised enticing people to attend.

Then I read the post by blogger Tim Challies. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Matthew 18:3-4

Leonard Ravenhill tells the story about a group of tourists visiting a picturesque village in Europe. As the tour guide was relating the history of the village a tourist saw an old man sitting on a bench.

In a rather patronizing way, the tourist asked the old gentleman, “Were any great men born in this village?” Continue reading

Should Preachers Be Forced to Perform Same-Sex Marriages?

Same-sex marriage has been the law of the land in the United States since June 26, 2015. So far, Preachers who hold a conscientious, Scriptural objection have not been forced to perform such ceremonies

But could that change?

Apparently, Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, is prepared to force religious leaders to perform same sex marriages. Continue reading

Judgment Day is Coming

W. C. Fields (1880-1946) was an American comedian, actor, and writer. He was quick with a witty quip. And could make audiences roar with laughter. Ironically it is said that Fields was “chronically unhappy. “

As an avowed atheist, religion played no part in Field’s life. He “regarded all religions with the suspicion of a seasoned con man.”

However, late in his life when he faced the reality of death, the story is told of a friend visiting Fields and found him reading the Bible. Continue reading

“I’m going to die,” Roberta Ursrey thought to herself. “My family is going to die this way.”

Ursrey, who had just moved to Florida a month ago, was at Panama City Beach Saturday night, with her husband, mother, nephew and two sons, Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8. The boys had gotten separated while chasing waves on a boogie board. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 13:34

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”

These words are the familiar opening lines of Elisabeth Barrett Browning’s famous 43rd sonnet. What may not be as familiar to most people is Browning’s background.

She was a frail, sick woman who was dominated by a possessive father. She spent most of her time alone in an upstairs room medicated by opium. Elisabeth’s one outlet, producing joy, was her poetry. Continue reading

How Gullible Are We?

Yesterday my phone kept dinging because everyone was warning me about accepting a facebook friend request from Jayden K. Smith, an alleged hacker who’s going to corrupt my computer, hack my friend’s accounts, and probably drain my bank account.

You got a few dings too, eh?

Well, by now, you probably know this was a hoax.

It reminded me of this true story that occurred in the late 1990’s. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Knowledge

Ray Comfort in his book, Hell’s Best Kept Secret, relates a tragic story about a woman who was once walking along a riverbank with her child.

Suddenly the child slipped into the river. The mother screamed in terror. She couldn’t swim, and besides, she was in the latter stages of pregnancy. Finally, somebody heard her screaming and rushed down to the riverbank. Continue reading
