Immeasurable Love

A couple of years ago I had a meeting in Wellandport, Ontario, Canada. Norma Jean and I stayed with our good friends Mike and Sherry Stephens.

During the week Mike was telling me about the wood mantel above his fireplace. It was a beam from his grandfather’s barn in Lincoln County, Kentucky. When I went to look at the beam, sitting on it with other pictures was a stone plaque engraved with these words that I’ve not forgotten. Continue reading

Sunday or “Funday”?

Worship is a frequent theme of the Psalmist.

“…I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple” (Ps 5:7)

“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” (Ps 29:2)

” Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool —He is holy” (Ps 99:5).

No wonder the this man of God could affirm, “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Ps 122:1) Continue reading

Your Tone

My wife, Norma Jean, was going through some folders the other day and found this poem, The Tone of Voice. She shared it with me and said that she needed it every day. I think that was a nice way to remind me that I need it more than she does.

It’s good advice from my favorite author, anonymous. I thought our readers would like it. Continue reading

What Drives You?

Everyone is driven by something.

Is it a problem? Pressure? Or an urgent deadline? There are so many things in life that drive who we are, what we do, and how we act or react.

Some people are driven by guilt. They live in regret over a mistake-ridden past. Continue reading

Jesus Centered Worship

In John’s Revelation, Jesus is the center of worship in the great throne scene in chapter 5. The angels, living creatures and elders along with the number of ten thousand times ten thousand cried out “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor, and glory and blessing!” Continue reading

Worship Strengthens

Christians find spiritual strength in many ways. Bible study. Prayer. Fellowship. But one way in which we can derive strength on a regular basis that touches all of our senses is through worship.

One writer defined worship as “an encounter with the living God.” I like that better than “worship experience.” Sometimes too much emphasis is placed on a subjective experience, or a manufactured or contrived experience. It is possible to have an experience, but not experience true, spiritual worship. Continue reading

Resolved

We sometimes sing the song “I am Resolved” as an invitation song. The lyrics appeal to the non Christian to make a commitment to Christ. To resolve in one’s will to make a change.

Resolution is also good for Christians. As we begin a new year here are some resolutions you might want to consider. Continue reading

Jesus Focused

In his book Worship is a Verb, Robert Webber writes, The focus of worship is not human experience, not a lecture, not entertainment, but Jesus Christ—his life, death and resurrection.”

Worship. It’s not about showcasing the talent of a gifted musician, or displaying a preacher’s knowledge of Greek verbs, or even a pleasant reunion of family and friends. It’s about Jesus. Continue reading

Christianity

What is Christianity?

“Christianity, in its purest form, is nothing more than seeing Jesus,” writes Max Lucado in God Came Near. “Christian service, in its purest form, is nothing more than imitating him who we see. To see His Majesty and to imitate him, that is the sum of Christianity” elaborates Lucado. Continue reading

Character

“Jesus never begged anyone to believe in Him. He knew that integrity cannot be proven; it must be discerned,” wrote Mike Murdock.

“He never wasted time with critics. He kept his attention on His goal. He stayed focused. They accused Jesus of being filled with devils! He paid no attention. He simply continued to cast out devils. Jesus never strived to ‘look good.’ He simply was good. He did not labor to appear truthful. He was truthful. He never struggled to have a good reputation. He had character.” Continue reading
