Bonus October Blogs from ThePreachersWord

Those who are regular readers know that I post 5 days a week—Monday-Friday.  However, this month I am participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  The challenge for bloggers is to post something every day in the month of October.

My plan is to use Saturday to share a little humorous story with a short, simple moral to it.  And on Sunday to post a seed thought pertaining to the Lord’s Day.

So, to start, here’s one of my favorite stories…..  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When Life Feels Futile

Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher once lamented, “I feel as if I were a piece in a game of chess, when my opponent says of it: That piece cannot be moved.”

The 17th century author and theologian, Thomas Fuller, lamented, “We are born crying, live complaining and die disappointed.”

“Youth is a blunder, manhood a struggle, and old age a regret.” Opined the 19th century British statesman and Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. Continue reading

“I’m Not Perfect”

Have you seen former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his media tour promoting his new book?  “Total Recall: My Unbelievable True Life Storyis mainly about his success as a world-champion bodybuilder, a Hollywood box-office heavyweight, and two-term Governor of California.

One chapter, called “The Secret,” is devoted to his affair with their housekeeper that produced an out-of-wedlock son, who was five years old when he ran for govenor. Continue reading

What’s The Heart of the Matter?

On Jason’s first day of school, the class was asked to stand, place their right hand over their heart and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The teacher, Mrs Jones, watched the children as they began, “I pledge allegiance to the flag….” when she noticed Jason had his right hand over his left ear.  She stopped and said, “Jason, put your hand over your heart.”

Jason replied, “It is over my heart!”

After repeated attempts failed to get Jason to put his hand over his heart, Mrs Jones asked, “Why do you think that is your heart?” Continue reading

What I Saw From My Deck

I was sitting in the basement watching “The Five.”  My Dell notebook on my lap. A glass of Pepsi and some chips by my side.  As I thought about today’s post, my ruminations were interrupted when Norma Jean came down stairs and said, “Come up and sit on the deck!”

“I can’t. I  need to write my blog for tomorrow,” I replied. Continue reading

MEMBERSHIP: ITS BLESSINGS AND BENEFITS

“Membership has its Privileges” touts an American Express commercial.  The credit card and financial services company  has promoted the idea of membership for years.  Their slogan speaks of the benefits of membership.  The same is true of many clubs and organizations that are seeking to sell prospective members on the benefits of being in their organization. IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Am I Guilty of Crucifying Christ?

Who crucified Christ on that black Friday 20 centuries ago?

Was it the crude and cruel Roman soldiers who nailed the spikes into his hands and feet? Who gambled for His garments at the foot of the cross?  And who pierced His side with a spear? Continue reading

Priceless Scribbles

I recently came across a true story by Richard Fairchild, published many years ago in The Christian Reader. It was called “Priceless Scribbles.” He recounts a story about a father who profoundly impacted his son’s life in a uniquely and unexpectedly profound way.

A young boy watched as his father walked into the living room. He noticed that his younger brother, John, began to cower slightly as their dad entered. The older boy sensed that John had done something wrong. Then he saw from a distance what his brother had done. The younger boy had opened his father’s brand new hymnal and scribbled all over the first page with a pen. Continue reading

The Ordinary. The Common. The Sacred.

My facebook friend and sister in Christ, Tami Spidle, wrote as her status yesterday, “Praising God for the magic of ordinary days, for joy in the little moments, knowing His presence is in them all, making me feel complete.”

I like that.  A lot.  It reminds me of the Psalmist’s declaration. “This is the day the Lord has made;  We will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24). Continue reading

Anger Management

It began as a friendly Xbox game of Madden NFL 2013.  It ended with a night in jail.  USA Today reported that two brothers, Michael and Abrey Mayweather of Racine, Wisconsin, were arrested for domestic abuse when the competition got physical.

According to the criminal complaint the 21-year-old, Michael, took the loss and his 19th year old brother’s name calling personal.  The dispute became physical when Michael tried to lock Abrey out of the apartment.   The two began shoving one another and it turned into a full-fledged fight.  According to the police report, the door was ripped off its hinges, the metal frame was bent and broken furniture was scattered through the apartment.

Now here’s the kicker….. Continue reading
