The Hard Consequences of Sin

Consequences

Zach Anderson is in court today. Again. It’s the last place his parents, Les and Amanda Anderson, ever thought their 19-year-old son would be.

Zach is described as a “typical teen-ager. He’s into computers and wants to build a career around his love for electronics.” But his plans for the future are banished. At least for now. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 2Peter 3:18

Lobster

The late author Eda LeShan became noted for the “lobster story” reprinted in magazines, books and blogs through the years.  I recently came across it again and was challenged by its truth and simplicity.

LeShan tells about attending a dinner party and being seated next to an Oceanographer. She wondered, what will we talk about? Almost immediately the gentleman turned ask her, “Do you know how a lobster is able to grow bigger when its shell is so hard?” Continue reading

Newsflash! All Lives Matter.

races babies

“We say so often … do black lives matter? And at the end of the day, we have to ask ourselves, do all lives matter — regardless of race, creed, color, economic status, what profession that person holds? All lives matter.”

The above quote is from an African-American, Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong. It was spoken at a news conference over the week-end following the murder of a Memphis police officer, Sean Bolton, 33, who was shot multiple times Saturday night. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition but later pronounced dead.  Continue reading

 continue road clouds

Victor Villasenor was born in the barrio of Carlsbad, California in 1940. When Victor began school, he spoke only Spanish, like his Mexican parents. Besides the language barrier, he faced cultural challenges, heavy discrimination and a reading problem, later diagnosed as dyslexia.

Villasenor dropped out of school his junior year and moved back to Mexico. As a young adult a compassionate woman taught him to read, and ironically Victor decided he wanted to be a writer. For ten years he worked as a common laborer, digging ditches and cleaning houses. But all the while he thought about plots and characters in the stories he could write.  Continue reading

We All Need A “Storm Home”

Blizzard

On the PBS radio program, Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor, the American author and humorist, once told the story about his “storm home.”

Keillor was entering the seventh grade and the principle, Mr. Detman, was fearful of a winter blizzard that would strand the students. So he assigned each student from the country a “storm home” in town near the school. If a blizzard struck, each child was to go to his or her storm home. Continue reading

5 Questions about Your Values

I BEAM

What are your core values? To help you think about it, here’s a illustration developed by James Newman in Releasing You Brakes!

Suppose I come to your house with a 120’ I-beam and lay it across your front yard. When you come out, I wave a $100 bill and say if you can cross from one end to the other in less than 2 minutes, I’ll give you the $100. Would you do it? Why not? What have you got to lose? Continue reading

Ann Weems is an author, poet and lecturer. Her popular book Psalms of Lament, as well as other works are drawn from her personal grief and deep anguish.
