Several years ago a friend of mine, Judy Baker, gave me a neat little book entitled The Everyday Guide to God. It is a listing of the many qualities and characteristics of God from A-Z with an appropriate Bible verse. Let me share a few for your reflection on this Lord’s Day. Continue reading
IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! “I Am The Bread of Life”
In his book, God’s Psychiatry, Charles Allen tells this story that occurred as World War II was drawing to a close.
The Allied armies had gathered up many hungry orphans and they were placed in camps where they were well fed. Despite excellent care, they slept poorly. They seemed nervous and afraid. Finally, a psychologist came up with the solution. Continue reading

It’s In Your Hands
Once upon a time there lived high in the Himalayan mountains an old man known for his wisdom. Periodically, he ventured down into the local village and amazed villagers with his knowledge and insight.
He knew when it would rain, and thus when the village should plant crops. He could predict the frost, and thus when crops should be harvested. He knew how to treat illness and prevent impending illness. Being so well respected, people would flock to him to seek his advice and counsel. They would bring questions and the wise man provided answers. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Ephesians 3:20
I’m not a golfer. But I know that one of the greatest golfers of all time was Arnold Palmer. During his career he won 92 times, including 4 Master’s tournaments. He was PGA player of the year in 1960 and 1962. And Athlete of the Decade in the 1960’s. For years he endeared himself to his many loyal fans called “Arnie’s Army”
I recently read a story that during his heyday Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The King was so impressed with Palmer as a person and an athlete than he proposed to give him a gift.
“That really isn’t necessary, Your Highness.” Arnold demurred. “I’m honored to have been invited.” Continue reading

An Abortionist: “I Sell Dead Babies”
In the past few days an undercover video has been released by the Center for Medical Progress that should be shocking and disgusting to all civilized people.
Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s Senior Director of Medical Services, is describing how her organization sells the body parts of unborn aborted children during a luncheon appointment. Continue reading

WORD OF THE WEEK: Accepted
“I grew up knowing I was different, and I hated it. I was born with a cleft palate,” writes Mary Ann Bird in her poignant unpublished memoir, The Whisper Test.
When she started school Mary Ann remembers , “my classmates made it clear to me how I looked to others: a little girl with a misshapen lip, crooked nose, lopsided teeth, and garbled speech.” Continue reading

Be Thankful
Plutarch who lived from 46-120 A.D. once wrote, “The worship most acceptable to God comes from a thankful and cheerful heart.” The Psalmist often coupled the sprit of thanksgiving with worship to God. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Before There Was Time There Was Christ
“A Man Named ‘God’ Settles With Credit Agency He Sued.”
This ABC headline is not a hoax. A 27-year old Brooklyn man named “God” finally won his battle with Equifax to recognize his name as legitimate. God Gazarov, a Russian immigrant, claims he was named “God” after his Grandfather, a well-respected army commander. Continue reading

THE CHALLENGE OF COMMITMENT
The Scottish minister, David Livingstone was one of the most popular national heroes of 19th century Britain. He was known as an explorer. Scientific investigator. Anti-slavery crusader. And Protestant missionary martyr.
The story is told that Livingstone once received a letter from the London Missionary Society inquiring about his work in Africa. They asked the explorer, “Have you found a good road to where you are? If so, we want to know how to send other men to join you? Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Jeremiah 20:9
While returning to the office from lunch yesterday, Justin Berss, my summer preaching intern, and I were discussing some of our favorite Bible verses.
Justin opined that it’s hard to select just one. But when we returned to the church building, he hollered from the adjoining office, I know what my favorite verse is!
“What?”
“Jeremiah 20:9”
“What does it say?” Continue reading
