Are The Duggars Hypocrites?

As we continue our countdown of the top 10 posts of 2015, this one was ranked #6. It was discussed, debated, and disputed. In light subsequent revelations of Josh Duggar’s adultery and admission that “I’m the biggest hypocrite there ever was” it does change the perspective of what I wrote at the time. However, the Biblical truth remains unchanged and should be read from that point of view.

Jim Bob Michelle Duggar

Last week I posted this question: “Does Sin Negate the Christian Faith?”

It was in response to the considerable media coverage about the family of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and the revelation that their son, Josh, was guilty of “inappropriate touching” about 12 years ago.

My post was very clear that I was not condoning Josh Duggar’s sinful behavior when he was a teenager. Neither was I attempting to pass judgment on the response of the Duggars, nor to defend them. . My post had one fundamental point: Sin in the life of a Believer does not invalidate the Bible teaching on morality, nullify the Truth, or negate the Christian Faith.

GOD ISN’T FIXING THIS” screamed the headline from Thursday’s New York Daily News following Wednesday’s mass shooting in San Bernardino leaving 14 dead and 21 wounded.

The subheading said, “As the latest bunch of innocent Americans are left laying in pools of blood, cowards who could  truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes.”

“The headline caught my eye: “Is it OK to live together before marriage’”, wrote Rubel Shelly in a recent Fax of Life.

What Mr. Trump Should Have Said

Based on reader views this post came in at #9 for 2015. Who would have guessed that Trump would still be leading in the polls 4 months later after these comments?!

Trump Kelly

Last Thursday night I joined 24 million other Americans and watched the Republican Presidential Debate on Fox News. While I did have two or three candidates that I was particularly interested in seeing, I admit I was curious what kind of fireworks Donald Trump would ignite! And it didn’t take long!

In the beginning Trump admitted that he would not commit to unconditional support the GOP nominee. Unless it was him! Then came Megyn Kelly’s question and Trump’s answer that people and pundits are still buzzing about.

Hell, Hades in the world

Every Saturday the Kansas City Star has a column entitled Voices of Faith. They pose a question and then ask two local religious leaders to address it. Often their answers consist of personal opinions, particular denominational doctrine, or concepts from pop culture.

Last Saturday’s question was “What’s the purpose of Hell?”

End of the Year Reflections

IMG_4877

Good Morning from Temple Terrace, Florida.

It’s 73 degrees here which is a welcome change from the 32 that I left yesterday in Kansas City. It’s still dark and a good time to share some reflections and personal thoughts with our readers around the world as I enjoy my first cup of coffee.

This is a time of year during the holiday season to enjoy family and friends. Share special times. Savor some good food. Indulge your “sweet tooth.” Relish the festive nature of the season. Sit by the fireplace and sip some hot chocolate, or in our case this year enjoy a morning walk by the Hillsborough River in shorts and a T-shirt. Continue reading

Am I a Builder or a Wrecker?

Builder. Wrecker

I watched them tearing a building down,
A gang of men in a busy town.
With a ho-heave-ho and lusty yell,
They swung a beam and a sidewall fell.

I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,
The men you’d hire if you had to build?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Mark 16:15-16

Mark 16.15

Yesterday’s post, Will a Loving God Send People to Hell?” elicited a great deal of response, especially on facebook.

Apparently some people don’t believe in the Bible doctrine of Hell. Others try to side step it. One person even responded with a sexually explicit picture. I guess that was their way of objecting to the post. However, a common response was “No. you send yourself to Hell by refusing to obey God.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Behave

behave

I can still recall as a child my mother giving me a stern look and uttering those two words that stuck fear in my heart “Behave yourself.” I knew exactly what she meant.

“Behave yourself” meant that I wasn’t acting the way she had taught me. Either my words, rowdiness, or attitude was not in keeping with the way she expected me to be.

“Behave yourself” served as both a correction and warning. I understood. There needed to be a change. And quickly. If not, there would be some consequences. Continue reading
