Sunday or “Funday”?

Worship is a frequent theme of the Psalmist.

“…I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple” (Ps 5:7)

“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” (Ps 29:2)

” Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool —He is holy” (Ps 99:5).

No wonder the this man of God could affirm, “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Ps 122:1) Continue reading

You Are My God

God. My God

Three days and three nights. 15 Lectures. 15 men. And 15 Psalms. Now the 2016 Florida College Lectures have ended. But, not my renewed quest to know God. Heighten the awareness of God in my life. And enhance my relationship with God.

The theme, “You Are My God,” has served us well. Actually, more than “well.” It has been magnificent. We have been revived. Renewed. And energized. Last night Ralph Walker closed the Lectures with a lesson based on Psalm 145, “I Will Bless Your Name Forever.” Continue reading

Fret Not Over Evildoers

Psalm 37.1

This week, I’m enjoying what those in the business world and my tax accountant call “professional development” at the Florida College Lectures. I call it spiritual enlightenment.  The theme “You Are My God” is a series of lessons from the Psalms designed to strengthen and enhance our relationship with God.

Yesterday morning, I heard three really wonderful lessons. Ed Harrell spoke from Psalm 31, “Let Me Never Be Ashamed.” This lecture alone is worth the price of the book. I also heard Edwin Crozier’s masterful delivery of “Hear, O My People” from Psalm 50. If you missed it, buy the book and the CD to both read and hear it. Continue reading

God’s World, Word and Worshiper

psalm 19.1

Yesterday was a rich journey into the Psalms at the Florida College Lectures. It was edifying. Inspiring. And challenging.

Bob Owen answered the question, “Who may abide in Your Tabernacle?” John Gentry addressed Psalm 19, a great lesson on the magnificence of God’s Word. Jeff Wilson studied the Messianic Psalm 22. Don Hooton encouraged the audience from Psalm 27, a message of faith, trust and confidence in the Lord. And Tommy Peeler closed last night with a powerful presentation from Psalm 2 affirming that the Lord rules and reigns today in the midst of an ungodly world. Continue reading

What Is Your Life’s Choice?

Chapter 1 of the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible

You Are My God is the theme of the 2016 Florida College Lectures that Norma Jean and I are attending this week.

It is a series of lessons from the Psalms that addresses our relationship with God. The question that President Buddy Payne raised in his forward to the lecture book is one that is often asked by spiritually minded seekers: “How do I get closer to God?” Continue reading

A 50 Year Anniversary

FC Lectures 1966

Today finds Norma Jean and me in Temple Terrace, Florida, where we will be attending the Florida College Lectures this week.

It’s been an annual tradition for me. This is the 50th  consecutive year I’ve attended what we fondly just call “The Lectures.” Yes, I was only 5 when I attended the first time! Continue reading

Your Tone

My wife, Norma Jean, was going through some folders the other day and found this poem, The Tone of Voice. She shared it with me and said that she needed it every day. I think that was a nice way to remind me that I need it more than she does.

It’s good advice from my favorite author, anonymous. I thought our readers would like it. Continue reading

7 Suggestions For Building Better Relationships

Relationships

While yesterday’s post on the passing of Harry Pickup Jr. didn’t quite “go viral,” it did receive the most single day views of any new post in over a year.

The post was shared several hundred times on facebook, received many comments and compliments, but most of all engendered numerous stories and observations that people shared about our beloved brother.

One of the best was posted by my friend John Shirley. “After generations of misapplication, “larger than life” is a pretty tread-bare description. But I think it applies to Harry.”

John then relates this memory. Continue reading

Personal Reflections on the Passing of Harry Pickup, Jr.

Pickup HarryC. R. Nichol was one of the great preachers, teachers and religious writers of the late 19th and early 20th century.   He was known, not only for his scholarly work, but for his wisdom and quick wit.

One morning, while taking a walk, a friend cheerily greeted him, “Good morning, Bro. Nichol, I see that you’re still in the land of the living.”

Without missing a beat, he quickly quipped as he walk on, “No. I’m in the land of the dying. But I hope one day to go to the land of the living.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 5:13

Salt of the earth

How valuable is salt?

While there is some conflicting medical opinions, it is generally understood that some salt is necessary for life.

Terry Dasher writes, “40 million tons are required each year to fill our needs. Homer called it divine. Plato called it a “substance dear to the gods.” Shakespeare mentioned salt 17 times in his plays.”

” Perhaps Leonardo da Vinci wanted to send a subtle message about purity lost when he painted The last Supper. In that painting an overturned salt-cellar is conspicuously placed before Judas.” Continue reading
