5 Ways To Cope With Election Anxiety

election-stress-disorder-voting

Now there’s another disorder. Election stress disorder. Dr. Asim Shah, vice chair for community psychiatry at Baylor College of medicine in Houston, says it’s real.

Apparently Shah is right. A quick Google search of “election stress disorder” revealed 1,540,000 hits.

Shah said that symptoms of this once-every-four-years disorder include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping and a sinking or doomed feeling.

According to recent news reports The American Psychological Association says the election is the source of “a significant amount of stress for more than half of all Americans and is prevalent in both parties.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Election

BlueButton

Tomorrow in the United States is election day. Our nation selects a new President. The polls have been all over the map. Some favor Clinton. Others favor Trump. Some say the race is too close to call.  And still others are predicting a landslide victory for Clinton. Or Trump.  Depending on who you listen to.

In so many obvious ways this election has been unusual and unprecedented. Because of their drastically differing views, background and temperament, some have opined that this election is one of the most important in our history

While much has been discussed and written about the candidates and the importance of our vote tomorrow, much of it in vitriolic language, ThePreachersWord believes a few rational, balanced, Biblical thoughts are in order. Here’s my view. Continue reading

Three Challenges To Commitment

Jesus.Follow

In 1964 there arose a confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia. A group of Gurkhas from Nepal were asked if they would be willing to jump from transport planes into combat if needed. Since they had never been trained as paratroopers, the Gurkhas had the right to refuse.

While usually very agreeable, they first refused. However, the next day, they reconsidered and told the British officer who had asked them that they would jump under these conditions: The ground was marshy or reasonably soft with no rocky outcrops and they wanted the plane to fly as slowly as possible at no more that 100 feet high. 7 Things To Remember in the Next 7 Days

election-2016-2

In 7 days America votes for the next President. Won’t it be wonderful when it’s over?

My feelings are well summarized in a post by blogger Bob Russell last week when he wrote, “Two things continue to disturb me about the current Presidential campaign. First, like most Americans, I am deeply troubled that the two candidates are so terribly flawed. I know there has never been a perfect candidate but this campaign is overstating the case. Someone said, “America is a country where anyone can become President and this election proves it!” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Walk

walk-with-god

A mother asked her 5-year-old son, Jason, what he studied in Bible class that day.

“ A man named Enoch,” replied Jason.

“What did you learn about Enoch?” His mom asked.

“He walked with God,” Jason answered. Then he added, “And the teacher said he didn’t ever die.”

“What do you think that means?” his mother probed. Continue reading

Hope When It Seems Hopeless

hope-empty-tomb

Joseph Bayly, in his book The View From A Hearse, tells of what he said to offer hope to a woman whose small son was dying.

“It’s good to know, isn’t it,” I spoke slowly, choosing my words with unusual care, “that even though the medical outlook is hopeless, we can have hope for our children in such a situation. We can be sure that after our child dies, he’ll be completely removed from sickness and suffering and everything like that, and be completely well and happy.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 34:19

 sorrow-crying

“And they lived happily ever after.”

We recognize the above phrase as the epitome of a fairy tale’s standard ending. Or the predictable plot line in a romantic Hallmark movie. Yet, we instinctively know that not everything in this life is fair. Equitable. Just. And certainly not filled with happiness.

Life is filled with dangers, disappointments and discouragements. We experience hurt, heartache and unhappiness. Sooner or later we all must deal with physical ailments, emotional stress and even the grief caused by death. Continue reading
