Great Verses of the Bible: Hebrews 12:1

In the 1968 Mexico City Olympics John Stephen Akhwari represented Tanzanai in the marathon. Along the course Akhwari stumbled and fell, severely injuring his knee and ankle. But he kept on running.

Hours after an Ethiopian runner had won, Akhwari limped into the Olympic stadium. Only a few thousand spectators were left, but they began to cheer the courageous Tanzanian. Bloodied, bruised and bandaged he grimaced with every step as he completed the final lap of the race.

Later, a reporter asked Akhwari, “Why did you continue the race after you were so badly injured?” Continue reading

Respecting Authority

It doesn’t appear that the vitriol toward our newly elected President is going to disappear anytime soon.

In his latest music video Snoop Dogg literally takes aim at President Trump with a gun pointed at a clown dressed like the President. The rapper listed many of his grievances with the President including his travel ban, “people being in jail for weed” and of course, just winning the Presidency itself. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Time

Saturday night we set our clocks up one hour to begin the semi-annual debate about Daylight Saving Time.

Some like it. Others loathe it.

President Harry Truman called it “a monstrosity in time keeping.”

Benjamin Franklin justified Daylight Saving Time as having “the pure light of the sun for nothing,” as opposed to burning expensive candles. Continue reading

Influencing Others

In his book, It’s All About The People, Dee Bowman tells a great story about E. J. Nichols from Dickens County, Texas. Dee describes him as “a strong man spiritually.” He says he was “rather rough around the edges, but there was a gentleness about him, too.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 118:6

It was on March 4, 1933, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered that famous line in his first inaugural address: “The only thing we have to fear is….fear itself.”

Now 84 years later various polls indicate that Americans are more afraid than ever before. People fear for their personal safety, and national security, and economic well being. Americans fear our country is on the wrong track. Continue reading

Spiritual Vision in a Dark World

How is your night vision?

It is common to hear older people say, “I don’t drive at night.” Why? Their night vision is not very good. So, they don’t want to take a chance of having an accident.

Even it your night vision is pretty good, have you ever spent the night in a strange place and woke up in the night and it’s pitch black. No light. Nothing to help you see a thing. It’s a strange and eerie feeling. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Beauty of Sameness

Seed Thoughts

This morning Norma Jean and I are waking up to colder temperatures. And the possibility of snow. But with a warm feeling in our hearts.

We’re in Portland, Oregon, where we attended the wedding of my former preaching intern, Justin Berss, and Ali Beth Shropshire. Today we will be worshiping with and I will be preaching for the brethren at the 160th Avenue Church of Christ. Continue reading
