On our Southwest flight to Portland yesterday there was a great article in their magazine about the soulful singer, songwriter Valerie June. The Jackson, Tennessee, native discussed the musical influences in her formative childhood years. Continue reading

Two Evangelists Charged. Tried. Convicted.

street-preachers

Yesterday a Bristol Magistrates’ Court in Great Britain convicted two men, Michael Overd and Michael Stockwell on “public order offences.”

What did they do that resulted in their arrest and conviction?

Was it public indecency? Disturbing the peace? Inciting a riot? Sexual harassment? Discharging a firearm? Disorderly conduct?

No. It was none of the above. I had to fact check this story, because it almost sounded like something from Babylon Bee. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Matthew 7:21-23

 matt-7-21

Jeff Strite relates a true story about an English professor who was on her way to class one day. She was running late and was going over the speed limit. Then she saw the dreaded red and blue lights in her rear view mirror and heard the siren, and she pulled over.

As the policeman was making out her ticket, he asked her why she’d been going so fast. Being an English professor, she thought she’d be a little clever… and so she quoted Robert Frost: “I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.” Continue reading

“They Booed The Name of Jesus”

Homosexual acceptance. Same-sex marriage. Transgender bathrooms. Just when you think you’ve heard it all. Then you hear something that leaves you shaking your head in disbelief. And almost speechless.

Almost. Because ThePreachersWord has about a 500 word retort. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Choice

choice

During World War II, Winston Churchill was forced to make a painful choice. The British secret service had broken the Nazi code and informed Churchill that the Germans were going to bomb Coventry.

He had two alternatives:  (1) evacuate the citizens and save hundreds of lives at the expense of indicating to the Germans that the code was broken; or (2) take no action, which would kill hundreds but keep the information flowing and possibly save many more lives. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Grace and Mercy

Seed Thoughts

Grace and Mercy. These two words are often used together in the New Testament.

Detailed definitions are often provided in word studies and commentaries on the meanings and differences between grace and mercy. However, my friend and preaching colleague, Ken Green, posted the following on facebook that says it very eloquently. Continue reading

Equipping Young Men To Preach

 w

Yesterday was a long and tiring day. But a very rewarding one. Today promises more of the same. I’m in Irving, Texas, at the Westside Church speaking at their annual Young Preachers’ Workshop.

For the past 11 years the Westside preacher, Mark Roberts, and Warren Berkley who preaches for the Laurel Heights Church in McAllen, Texas, have offered this annual two day workshop for young preachers. While the topics change each year, their stated mission is the same: “Training preachers to preach the Word effectively and powerfully.”

YPW is not designed for doctrinal discussion, theological debates, or textual Bible study. Rather, it is an equipping and training opportunity to help young men learn the “nuts and bolts” surrounding the work of preaching. It is not theoretical, but practical. Continue reading

Will the World Come to an End in 2017?

end-of-the-world
A fundamentalist website called Signs of the End Times claims that the world will end in 2017.

According to Christian Today and Christian Headlines.com  “the website points to various current events to make a case that the signs have aligned to signal the end of the world and the second coming of Christ.”

“The signs the website points to include natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes and also cultural shifts, such as the cultural attitude toward sexual immorality, as well as increased persecution of Christians.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 2Peter 3:9

world-on-fire

The late John Clark, a powerful gospel preacher of the 20th century, used to tell a story about a Preacher waxing eloquent to a packed house about the second coming of Christ.

“I am coming soon,” he paraphrased Jesus’ promise.

With greater emphasis, he repeated, “I am coming soon.”

Finally, as he stood on the edge of the stage, with fevered pitched emotion, he shouted, “I am coming soon.” Continue reading

Loving the Unlovely

Our theme for 2017, where I preach at the West Main Church , is LOVE MORE. GIVE MORE. This blog that I wrote 5 years ago adds to that narrative. I hope our new readers will enjoy it. And that our long time readers from those early days will profit from reflecting on it again.

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

If you have children, you have seen “Beauty and the Beast.”  In fact you probably own a copy!  For those not into fairy tales, “The “Beast” is a Prince who could not love and was placed under a spell.  In order to turn back into a Prince, he had to win the love of another and return it before his twenty-first birthday.  But who could love a grotesque beast?  Well, this is where the lovely Belle, a girl from a small French town who is dissatisfied with life, enters the picture.
