What Comes Between You and God?

“Money often comes between men and God,” wrote A. W. Tozer.

“Someone has said that you can take two small ten-cent pieces, just two dimes,” Tozer observed, “and shut out the view of a panoramic landscape. Go to the mountains and just hold two coins closely in front of your eyes–the mountains are still there, but you cannot see them at all because there is a dime shutting off the vision in each eye.” Continue reading

Help My Unbelief

Dr. Doolittle, the classic children’s book, tells the story about the British veterinarian who had an array of exotic animals. And how he learned to speak to them in their own animal language.

Included in his menagerie was a Pushmi-pullyu ((pronounced “push-me—pull-you”) with two heads, one on each end of its body. It was a cross between a gazelle and a unicorn, although in the movie it’s pictured as a llama. The two heads had a mind of their own. And sometimes they opposed each other, which resulted in a tug of war. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Psalm 107

Joel Gregory tells a funny story about a family seated around their table one Thanksgiving Day looking at the annual holiday bird.

From the oldest to the youngest, they were to express their praise. When they came to the 5-year-old in the family, he began by looking at the turkey and expressing his thanks to the turkey, saying although he had not tasted it he knew it would be good. Continue reading

The Vision of Faith

In 1959 Walt Disney began looking for land to build a second resort to complement his Anaheim, California, park. Supposedly he was not happy with the many businesses that sprung up around Disneyland and wanted enough land to control the development around his next park.

It wasn’t until 1963 that Disney flew over the Orlando, Florida, area and finally decided on this location. The process of acquiring the land and building the park took 9 years. Disney died in 1966 before The Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Absolutes

Several years ago I was studying with a young lady who was a student at the University of South Florida. She was not a Christian, but attending our services and expressing interest.

I always begin Bible Studies with non-Christians by establishing Bible authority, so I asked: “Have you ever taken a philosophy class at USF?”

“Yes,” she nodded.

“Did the professor ever say, ‘There are no absolutes’? inquired. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: What is Faith?

This is too good not to share. In studying for my sermon this morning I came across this quote by the 19th-century Scottish minister, Alexander Maclaren.

“Faith is the sight of the inward eye.”

It fits with my text in Hebrews 11:1.  “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Continue reading

Sin. Sanctification. And the Son of God.

In yesterday’s post, I referred to Jesus as “the sinless Son of God.” In response one of our readers commented: “I am worried about your promotion of Jesus as ‘sinless.’”.

Then she added, “ I know Scripture and Christian teaching affirm Jesus as ‘sinless’”. However, the definition of sin has divided Christians. So perhaps you can write a blog and explain how the Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and the Protestants see sin and how Jesus and the cross redeem sinners…” Continue reading

Getting Angry Like Jesus

Is it ever okay to be angry? Is anger always a sin? Is there such a thing as righteous anger?

Too often, we’re advised by well-meaning folks that a Christian should never get angry. But is that really true? Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Mark 3:1-5

A husband and wife were on the way home from worship one Sunday morning. As they rode along, the wife asked her husband, “Did you see that woman in the front row showing off her Liz Claiborne suit?”

“No, I didn’t,” her husband replied.

“Well, did you see that man on our left–the one wearing that gaudy sport jacket that clashed with his slacks?” Continue reading

God is Still on the Throne

Sunday afternoon I tuned in to catch the second half of the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints football game.

I’m a fan of Drew Brees and expected to see a Saints victory and an all-pro performance by Brees. Instead, I saw a thrilling Vikings overtime win with embattled Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins throwing the game-winning touchdown Continue reading
