Seeing Like Paul Saw

Years ago Duffy Daugherty, the legendary Michigan State football coach, was in a tight game against UCLA. With only 14 seconds left to play the score was tied.

Daugherty sent in placekicker Dave Kaiser who booted a field goal that won the game. When Kaiser returned to the bench, Daugherty said, “Nice going, but you didn’t watch the ball after you kicked it.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Correction

“The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism,” once quipped the late Norman Vincent Peale, who was known for his classic “The Power of Positive Thinking.”

Even Peale realized that positive thinking and perpetual praise it is not enough. There are times in our lives when we all need to make changes. Modify our behavior. And make correction in the direction our life is taking. Continue reading

A Bonus Blog On A Bonus Day

“I wish I had more time…” We’ve all heard that said. Right? Maybe we’ve even said it ourselves! About a project. A deadline. Bible reading. Family activities. Or the workday. Well, today, your wish comes true! You have an extra day! Because it’s a leap year, there are 29 days in February.

I suppose we could treat this like any other day. Same routine. Same places to go. Same people we see. Same place for lunch. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing different. Just another day. Continue reading

In my view, there’s a little too much criticism of the brotherhood. And in the brotherhood. Here are some positive things for you to consider about our brotherhood.

3 Lessons Learned from Leviticus

Did you skip reading the book of Leviticus?

If you’re following Mark Roberts’ 5 Day Bible reading program of the entire Bible, you’re nearing the end of 9 long days of reading Leviticus. Pretty exciting stuff, eh?

You’re getting detailed information about all kinds of sacrifices and offerings. Burnt offerings. Sin offerings. Meal offerings. Peace offerings. Trespass offerings.

You read about the special Jewish observances. Besides the familiar weekly Sabbath observance, there’s the Day of Atonement. The Passover. Pentecost. Feast of Tabernacles. Feast of Trumpets. The Sabbatical Year. And the Year of Jubilee. It’s filled with details about blood, guts and animal fat. Continue reading

What Are You Craving?

This year I’ve been trying to improve my eating habits. Mainly reducing my sugar intake. And eliminating late-night junk food snacking.

I recently read that good nutrition is simple. To eat right, simply fill your plate with brightly colored foods. Greens. Reds. And Yellows.

Steve Shepherd, a Missouri preacher, said that’s what he tried. He just poured himself a bowl full of M&M’s. “It was delicious,” Steve said, “I never knew eating right could be so easy. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Hebrews 6

Terry Denis tells a story about a college professor, an atheist, who gave a lecture denying the existence of God. He cited book after book, scholar after scholar and a variety of “evidences” to prove there’s no God.

As the professor concluded, a man stood up eating an apple and asked: “This apple that I’m eating, tell me, is it sweet or is it sour?”

Incredulously the professor replied, “How should I know? I’ve not tasted that apple.” Continue reading

The Eye of Discernment

Ron Thomas tells a story about an elderly woman who stood on a very busy street corner in rush hour traffic. She was fearful, confused, and hesitant to cross by herself.

Finally, a gentleman came up to her and asked if he could cross the street with her. Grateful and very relieved, she took his arm and stepped into the busy intersection. As they proceeded, she grew progressively alarmed as he zigzagged randomly across the street, to the blare of horns and screech of locked brakes. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Brotherhood

Yesterday Norma Jean and I worshiped with the brethren at the Valrico church where I taught the Bible class and preached at the morning service.

It was wonderful to return to a church we’ve visited many times in the past and held meetings. I remember when the church began. My parents were a part of the original group when the church was planted. Several of those brethren are still there. Continue reading
