A family had the habit of treating their children for ice cream after the church service. One Sunday the father decided to break the habit. The children were not happy about it. They started whining. The father decided to use spirituality to deal with the situation. He asked, “Where in the Bible is it said that we should eat immediately after the service?” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! What shall I do with Jesus?
The #6 Razorbacks were playing the #2 Oklahoma Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl. Both teams were 10-1, yet Arkansas was an 18-point underdog. But then Holtz suspended three top players for violation of team rules. Now Arkansas was a 24-point underdog!
Following the suspensions, the press was livid. 12 Arkansas players threatened not to play. But Holtz didn’t back down. Continue reading

Anger. Identity. And a Change of Heart.
The United flight was cancelled. The airport was crowded. And a single gate agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers.
Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and demanded, “I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS.”
The agent replied, “I’m sorry sir. I’ll be happy to help you, but I’ve got to help these folks first. But I’m sure we’ll work something out.”
Unimpressed, the man shouted, so everyone could hear, “Do you have any idea who I am?” Continue reading
Where is the Tolerance and Respect for Diversity?
(This post received the 5th most hits from our readers in 2013)
Aaron and Melissa Klien have been the subject of protests. Boycotts. And Public outrage. In fact Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries has launched an official investigation.
“Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs, Commissioner Brad Avakian told The Oregonian but that doesn’t mean that folks have the right to discriminate.” Presumably in referring to the Klien’s, Avakian also said, “The goal is to rehabilitate.”
So who are Aaron and Melissa Klien? And what intolerable offense did they commit? Continue reading

Three Keys To Success
I’ve tried and failed. Several times. So why try again?
I’m too old now. If I was younger, I might. But, I’m past my prime.
And besides, I can’t do it myself. And I doubt anyone would want to help me.
These three excuses have kept more people from trying, more people from succeeding, and more people from a richly rewarding life than we can ever imagine.
Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way. Just ask Diana Nyad. Continue reading
Word of the Week: Majesty
Beautiful. Incredible. Gorgeous. Awesome. Amazing. Majestic. These and other descriptive words were exchanged by Norma Jean and me as we enjoyed our trip to the Rocky Mountains last week.
From the Vail Valley to Independence Pass. From Breckenridge to Aspen. From Beaver Creek to Piney River. It was one awe-inspiring, breath-taking, God-affirming sight after another. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT…..
For over a year I have written a column every Friday on ThePreachersWord called IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! It has spoken to some aspect of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as it relates to our lives today.
Well, it’s Friday. But today’s post is different. Continue reading

“With this Ring, I thee Lease….”
(Based on the number of hits, this post was the 4th most popular in 2013)
Picture this scene.
After a lovely dinner, under a full moon, Joshua gets down on one knee, opens a box with a sparkling diamond ring, hands it to Jessica and says, “Honey, I’d love to lease you…”
That doesn’t sound very romantic! Lease you? Not marry you? Well, not if Florida attorney, Paul Rampell has his way. Continue reading

What Do You Know Good?
“Preacher, what da’ ya’ know good?” asked D. B. Whittle. This was always the first question the aged brother would ask when I went to visit him in the nursing home.
It’s been a lot of years since we lived in Palmetto, Florida. I was a young preacher. Learning. Growing. Making mistakes. But trying to get better. And the brethren helped me. Our family has great memories of those 9 years. Wonderful friendships were formed that exist to this day. Continue reading

What Has Happened To Shame?
Sunday evening Norma Jean and I were watching Mike Huckabee’s program. I always like his opening monologues. They’re refreshing. Value-driven. And filled with common sense.
Sunday evening he was talking about the “embarrassing spectacle” caused by New York politicians former Congressman Anthony Weiner who is running for Mayor and former governor Eliot Spitzer who is vying for the job of City Comptroller. What a pair! A pervert. And a cheater who frequented prostitutes.
But I’m so tired of hearing about these immoral politicians, I was about to tune Governor Huckabee out when he asked an important and probing question, “What has happened to the simple virtue of shame?” Continue reading
