Commitment To Christ

Cross.Discipleship

Pliny the Elder, was a Roman writer who lived during the same time period as Jesus. He told a story of the setting of an obelisk, which when erect would stand 99 feet tall. Twenty thousand workers were chosen to pull on the ropes and activate the hoisting apparatus.

There was great responsibility and risk in the operation. Just one error could cause the obelisk to fall, ruining years of work. The King demanded one act which insured the complete attention of the engineer. Continue reading

Living in an Evil, Chaotic World

Evil.MalysianJetCrash

A commercial airliner is shot down over Ukraine. 298 people tragically lost their lives. And pro-Moscow separatists tied to Russian President Putin are alleged to be the perpetrators of this horrific act of violence.

At the same time we are witnessing another bloody conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The latest confrontation was sparked by the murder of three young Jewish boys and the possible revenge when an 18-year-old Palestinian teen was murdered. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! God’s Plan for You!

Cross+Tomb

Bradley Dugger, one of the Shepherds where I preached several years ago in Columbia, Tennessee, was fond of saying, “When you read John 3:16, insert your name instead of “God so loved the world.” In other words, say….

“ For God so loved (Ken Weliever) that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

That makes God’s plan for salvation personal. His love uniquely special. And his promise of eternal life individual. Continue reading

Hold On To Your Hope!

Hope.HoldOn

“Americans Losing Hope in the American Dream” screams the headline from a recent poll.

The article from NewsMax said, “Americans are pessimistic about their chances of achieving and sustaining the American dream.” According to the Marist-McClatchy Poll 80% of Americans think it’s harder now than in previous generations to get ahead.” Continue reading

Chris, a fellow blogger, from Arizona, asked me to write on Acts 4:12.

UNBROKEN: A Story of Fortitude and Forgiveness

Zapamarini

I already have something to look forward to for Christmas!   The movie,“Unbroken,” produced and directed  by Angelina Jolie is scheduled to be released December 25th.

“Unbroken” is based on  Laura Hillenbrand’s  book, which I read last year, by the same title.   It’s the incredible true story of Louie Zamperini, an Olympic athlete and World War II hero.  Continue reading

Word of the Week: Meditate

Meditation

Steven Bonner tells about taking a group of teenagers on a trip to Tuba City, Arizona.  Fondly he recalls the “spiritually transforming events” that  occurred on those trips.  Specifically, he relates the impressions of the devotional periods led by Paul Ghee.

As the teens met at the mouth of Coal Mine Canyon and sat down in the slightly black dirt, the sun is setting. There is a slight breeze.  Then Paul asks everyone to stop moving.  To be quiet.  So, “we could hear the silence?”

Steven rhetorically says, “Can you imagine what absolute silence sounds like?”  Then he describes it.  Continue reading

Are You Looking Forward to Going Home?

Heaven.3

Tom had recently changed jobs when he bumped into an old friend, Bill.

After exchanging greetings, Bill said, “Hey, I hear you got a new job.  How do you like it?”

Tom shook his head and said, “It’s the absolutely worse job I’ve ever had in my life!”

“Really?  Well, how long have you been there?

“Oh, about three months.”

“Then why don’t just quit?” asked Bill.  Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE Proverbs 3:5

Hanging.Branch

A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day, when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. Continue reading
