A Passage To Ponder: Matthew 14:22-36

Charles Allen, in Victory in the Valleys, tells a cute story about 5-year-old Johnny helping his mother make supper.

At one point, she asked him to go into the pantry and get her a can of tomato soup.

“It’s dark in there and I’m scared,” Johnny objected.

After repeating her request and Johnny continuing to express his fears, she said, “It’s ok, Jesus will be in there with you.” Continue reading

“Addicted To Outrage”

Nancy Kennedy is a columnist for our local paper, the Citrus County Chronicle, and the author of several books.

In last Saturday’s religious section, Nancy relates a 2013 story of a preacher, Caleb Kaltenbach, who went into a Simi Valley, California, Costco and saw a Bible in the fiction section.

Thinking it was simply a shelving error, it struck him as ironic and somewhat humorous, so he took a picture and posted it to Twitter. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Exemplary

General George C. Marshall was a highly regarded soldier and statesman. He served in the U. S. Army under Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, as well as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under Truman.

Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for a plan aimed at the economic recovery of Western Europe after World War II.

However, before he rose to fame, Marshall was given command of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA. When he arrived, he found the post in a general state of disrepair. Continue reading

Parable of the Apples

Once upon a time, there was a man who had nothing … and God gave him ten apples.

He gave him three apples to eat, three to trade for shelter from the sun and rain, and three apples to trade for clothing to wear. He gave him one apple so that the man might have something to give back to God to show his gratitude for the other nine. Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #50

Today’s list is about friendship, from author and seminar speaker, Alice Gray.

The Bible says “A friend loves at all times” and “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Prov. 17:17; 18:24).

Alice offers 13 ways that this is true. Continue reading

The Devil Desires You

Our Wednesday evening Bible class at the West Citrus Church is studying the beatitudes.

Last night we studied “Blessed are the persecuted…” We noted that conflict between Christians and the world is inevitable because there has always been conflict between God and satan.

With that, someone said, “Well, a lot of people don’t believe in the devil.” Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Matthew 7:1-5

Recently I was watching the Andy Griffith Show that taught a wonderful lesson called, “Opie’s Charity.”

The episode from 1960 begins with Annabelle Silby coming by Andy’s house while he and Opie are playing catch. She’s soliciting help for the annual children’s charity drive.

When Andy and Annabelle go to the courthouse to discuss the status of the fund-raiser, she compliments Mayberry’s children for their willingness to help. Andy uses this opportunity to brag on Opie, suggesting he’s probably one of the biggest contributors in the class. Continue reading

Good News in a Wicked World

“If it bleeds, it leads,” is an old expression that basically means that if there’s violence, destruction, or death involved it receives top billing on television news.

Unfortunately, negative news garners attention, attracts viewers, and improves ratings.

In fact, so much of the broadcast news today, both on network and cable TV is more commentary than news. It often reflects the political or social bias and the world view of the commentator or the network. And it’s often designed to fuel conflict, sow discord, and divide people. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Sincere

Our word today, “sincere,” provides a pleasant flashback to one of my epistles Bible classes at Florida College many years ago.

We were studying Philippians taught by Clinton Hamilton, who was meticulously thorough in his scholarship (If you’ve read one of his commentaries you know what I mean.)

We came to Philippians 1:9-10 which reads: Continue reading
