Word of the Week: Spirituality

There’s a story of a young Buddhist monk who sat outside his temple two thousand years ago, with his hands clasped in prayer. He looked very pious and he chanted ‘Amita Buddha’ all day. Day after day he intoned these words, believing that he was acquiring grace.

One day the head priest of the temple sat next to him and began rubbing a piece of brick against a stone. Day after day he rubbed one against the other.

This went on week after week until the young monk could no longer contain his curiosity, and he finally blurted out, “Father, what are you doing?” Continue reading

The Joy of Fellowship

This month I am preaching every Sunday at the Wellandport Church in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada. Additionally, I’m conducting a weekend meeting that concludes today. And teaching the adult class for their VBS later in July.

We’ve missed coming to Canada for the past two summers. We love the area. The cooler temperatures are a nice respite from the hot summers of Texas and Florida. But most of all we love the warm fellowship of these brethren. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 3-8

Good Morning from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

We’ve been here a week now and are lovin’ these early morning temperatures in the 60s and highs in the mid to upper 70s.  But most of all we’re lovin’ being with our Canadian friends and brethren. And sharing the Word in a weekend meeting at the Wellandport Church.

The Niagara region is a beautiful area.  If you ever come, cross the border and come to the Canadian side.  And schedule some time to worship with one of these fine churches.  You will be blessed. Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #92

“What can I do? is a question often asked by Christians who are not sure of their skills, abilities, or talents.

Today’s list suggests 9 things you can do, based on Galatians 6:1-10. You may not be able to do all 9 all the time, but you can probably do most of them.

9 Things You Can Do To Make A Difference Continue reading

Do You Belong to Yourself or Belong to God?

Forbes reports a new poll from the Monmouth University Polling Institute that ‘a stunning 88% of Americans now believe the U.S. is on the wrong track and just 10% believe it is on the right track.”

The issues concerning Americans are gas prices, the economy, bills, abortion, guns, and COVID-19, in that order.

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said “most Americans are blaming Washington for their current pain.” Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: Psalm 1

There’s a 1970s song, “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya,” released by the late Wilson Pickett, and later performed and recorded by a number of pop and country artists. The opening lines go like this.

Girl, try to remember when we didn’t have no shoes
We stuck together, just me and you
It took a long time to get what we got today
Now you wanna give it all up for another guy Continue reading

What Will You Do in the Next 179 Days?

Last Sunday I was blessed to preach for the Wellandport Church in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada. I have spoken there many times over the past few years, but it’s always a special treat to be with these wonderful brethren.

The Shepherds asked me to present lessons this month on my series “Let’s Renew in ‘22,” my preaching and writing theme this year. My keynote lesson takes the form often used in a New Year’s sermon, challenging us to take inventory of our lives, reevaluate our priorities, and set goals.

It occurred to me that we’re at a halfway point in the year, which is not a bad time to reexamine ourselves. Have your New Year’s resolutions, and 2022 goals fallen by the wayside? Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #91

Marc and Angel Chernoff are New York Times best-selling authors, professional coaches, bloggers, and self-proclaimed “ full-time students of life.”

Some time ago I came across an article by Marc about toxic behaviors that hinder our success and happiness in life. I suppose you could say that today’s list, is NOT one to live by. If your life is not what you want it to be, maybe some of these behaviors are holding you back. Continue reading
