Weekly Recap: April 4-9

Good morning from Beverly Hills, Florida,

“Psalm 116:15 is so comforting to all those (who) have lost loved ones.  Thank you for this morning’s blog,” wrote Peggy one of our regular readers.  Comments like this that we receive weekly, if not daily, continue to fuel our resolve to keep this little blog going.  I’m always amazed at how a particular post speaks to a reader’s situation that was unknown to me. Friday’s List To Live By #34

While unpacking my books that have been in storage for 33 months, I came across a neat little book by John Mason entitled “Ask.” It’s subtitled “Life’s Most Important Answers Are Found in Asking the Right Questions.”

The book offers 244 important questions you can ask yourself. Today’s list is in the form of questions for your consideration. Not 244. But I’ve picked 12 from the section “Looking Inward.” Continue reading

Discovering Purpose in Life

Even with all of the negatives of lockdowns, sickness, and death caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been some unforeseen positives.

Stories abound of neighbors helping neighbors. Relationships being rekindled. Families spending more time together. Preachers and pastors finding new and innovative ways to minister. An increase in people reading the Bible and spiritual material. And people becoming Christians Continue reading

A Passage to Ponder: Psalm 116:15

Some words or phrases don’t seem to go together. For example.

Icy hot.

Jumbo shrimp.

New antiques.

Sorta married.

Kinda pregnant.

Open secret. Continue reading

Predicting the Future

Last night the Baylor Bears scored a stunning and convincing 86-70 victory over the undefeated “Team of Destiny,” the Gonzaga Bulldogs to claim the NCAA men/s basketball championship.

Gonzaga was a five-point favorite by the oddsmakers and the choice by most of the sports analysts. However, the Bears dominated from the beginning, and it never felt close, even when the Zags once narrowed the margin to 9 points. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Reputation

In his book, I Almost Missed The Sunset Gospel singer and songwriter Bill Gaither tells a great story that illustrates the impact of our reputation.

Shortly after he and Gloria were married and living in Alexandria, Indiana, they began looking for some land to build a house. Soon they found a nice parcel south of town where cattle were grazing and learned it belonged to a retired 92-year old banker named Mr. Yule.

Yule owned a lot of land and was not interested in selling any of it. Furthermore, wanted it to remain used for agriculture. However, the Gaither’s visited Mr. Yule and inquired about buying it. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: A Special Day

For some people today is just another day. Just like any other day.

For a few, it’s just another day of work. For many others, it’s a day of relaxation, recreation, or sports. And for still other people it’s a day to catch up on household chores, to mow the yard or wash the car.

However, today is a very special day for all Christians. It is a sanctified day. It is a day set apart from all other days. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: March 28-April 2

Good morning from chilly Citrus County, Florida

This has been an exciting week in terms of getting settled.  My office furniture arrived, so I was able to unpack my books and start working from my new office instead of the dining room table.

Two realizations soon hit me.  (1) I didn’t give away enough books.  (2) If you’re moving from having both a church office and a home office into just one home office, realize that it’s not all going to fit. So, we’re storing out, repacking some stuff, and storing Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #33

While unpacking my books this week, I came across a paperback book I bought 50 years ago by Dale Carnegie, How To Win Friends And Influence People.

As I chuckled at the worn, dated-looking cover, I started to thumb through it and it fell open to the end of a chapter on how to make people like you. The six summary points from this classic best-seller are today’s list and still valid in the 21st century. Continue reading

A Serious Thought on A Light-Hearted Day

On occasion, we reference an obscure holiday or a historical event that happened on this day in history. Accordingly, here are four unusual events that reportedly happened on this day.

In 1957 the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees.

In 1985, Sports Illustrated reported about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour. Continue reading
