Living With Second Choices

(Monday I was privileged to speak in chapel at Florida College. Today’s blog post is an edited version of that talk.)

In 1959 Walt Disney began looking for land to build a second resort to complement his California park. And he wanted enough land to control the development around his next park.

It wasn’t until 1963 that Disney flew over the Orlando area and finally decided on this location. The process of acquiring the land and building the park took 9 years. Disney died in 1966 before The Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Continue reading

A Passage To Ponder: John 18:4

Hans Krause, a minister from Finland, tells a riveting story about the time when a group of theological students was attending a training seminar on pastoral counseling.

One of the members shared some of her childhood experiences that had recently come to the surface. For years on end, she had been sexually abused by a close relative, and there had been nobody to help her.

Hans remembers how everyone listened with deep sympathy to her as she unraveled her experiences and feelings, sobbing, and stammering. Most were dead silent, not knowing what to say or do. Continue reading

Unity in a Divided World

I don’t know when or who originated the term, “The Divided States of America,” but you’ve heard it. Seen it. And felt it.

The current political polarization is witnessed by the divide between Republicans and Democrats. Liberals and conservatives. Red states and blue states. Trumpers and Never-Trumpers. And religious and non-religious. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Anchor

Yesterday I was privileged to worship with and preach for the Palm Springs Dr. Church in Altamonte Springs. When I spoke at the communion service I shared this story and some accompanying thoughts from the book 6 Hours One Friday.

The author, Max Lucado, writes about a Labor day weekend when Hurricane David was devastating the Caribbean and headed toward South Florida. He writes that he  and some other guys were trying to figure out how to protect a houseboat they lived on. Desperately they tried to tie it down tight to the dock, trees, moorings, anything they could. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Best or Worst Day of the Week?

“Do you rush, push, shout, and become generally unpleasant on Sunday mornings? Asked blogger, author, and lecturer Karen Burton Mains.

“Do you complain about church?”

“Are you irregular in your attendance?”

“Are you over-conscientious about matters that are not really important?” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: November 9-13

Good morning from Indian Shores Beach, Florida,

Except for tropical storm Eta, which for us was very minor, we’ve been enjoying warm weather in the ’80s, gorgeous sunsets, and delicious seafood for the week.

This afternoon we’re driving over to Orlando where I’m preaching tomorrow for the Palm Springs Dr. Church in Altamonte Springs.  It’s been several years since we’ve been there, so we’re looking forward to being with these brethren again.    Monday, I’m speaking at Florida College for their daily devotional period.  On the 29th I will be preaching for the Skyview Church in Pinellas Park.  So, in addition to writing, we’re enjoying some ministry opportunities. Continue reading

Friday’s List To Live By #16

Today’s list is borrowed and modified from “The Interior Castle” by Teresa of Avila. It’s based on the concept found in Psalm 103:2 when David wrote,
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits.”

A Message For Hurting Hearts

My late father, Roy Weliever, was a Christian. He served as a Shepherd in the Lord’s church. He was a good provider. A hard worker. A godly example. And a man who loved to share God’s Word with others.

Our post today is based on one of his very favorite passages. It’s highlighted in his Bible. I’ve heard him use it for Wednesday evening talks. And I always think of him when I read it. Continue reading

Honoring and Remembering Our Veterans

In November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as “Armistice Day.”  It was hailed as a day of reflection to honor those who served in the military, both living and dead, at the end of World War I.

While the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until seven months later, the fighting ceased between the Allied nations and Germany on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.

Today we always commemorate this day, known now as “Veterans Day”  on November 11th. Continue reading

Reaping The Consequences Of Sin

“Do we still reap for all past sins if we are forgiven?”

This question was emailed to me by one of our regular readers, Brenda, back in September and it got put on the back burner during our Fall travels. Since it’s such a good question, one that others can profit from, I’m offering a public answer. Continue reading
