Great Verses of the Bible: 1Timothy 2:1-2

pray-america
In two days Donald J. Trump will take the oath of office as the 45th President of the United States. Unless you’re on a total news blackout, you know that this inauguration is being met with protests, demonstrations, and out right defiance in many quarters.

Mr. Trump is entering the Presidency with the lowest approval rating of any President in modern history. At least, that’s what the polls state . To say that his election has been unprecedented and controversial is an understatement. Continue reading

How To Live In A Divided Country

divided-america

“America is a sad place to live today,” posted one of my facebook friends, Jimmy Grushon, a long time friend and brother in Christ.

Jim laments, “The ideologies of politics have made people consumed in self and disrespectful of others who don’t view the world from their point of view. We are witnessing a society that hates more, is more hypocritical, more political, godless, more disrespectful and more self consumed than any time in my lifetime. “ Continue reading

character-quote

Today is a national holiday in the United States honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.  Congressman John Conyers and Representative Shirley Chisholm are responsible for introducing the bill that President Ronald Reagan signed into law in 1983. Although Dr. King’s birthday is January 15, the holiday is always observed on the third Monday of January. Continue reading

Cleansing the Temple

In the last week of Jesus’ life, he again finds the temple defiled by the religious leaders. They had turned the court where Gentiles could come and learn about God into a mercenary business, instead of a missionary business.
Jesus said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves” (Matt 21:13). Continue reading

Is Today An Unlucky Day?

friday-13
Welcome to the first of two Friday the 13ths in 2017. The other one is October 13.

Friday the 13th is considered by some to be the unluckiest day of the year. Psychologists have even come up with a word for fear of Friday the 13th– paraskavedekatriaphobia.  Movies and  books have capitalized on this fear.

Some “historians” claim Friday was the day Eve ate the forbidden fruit. The day the flood began. And the day the builders began the tower of Babel. Of course, there is absolutely no Biblical basis for those assertions.

But there have been some bad things happen on Friday the 13th. Continue reading

Are You Watching Out For The Kids?

miles-drive
In a recent trip to Lafayette, Louisiana, during the holidays, Norma Jean and I enjoyed walking to a park close to Kenny and April’s house. Little Miles likes to be outdoors. Loves the park. And likes to go to a nearby “free library.”

The “library” is a little free standing house a block from the park. A lovely older couple built it and placed in their side yard next to the street. There are always some children’s books in it. And even a bench to sit down and read. So when you’re at the park Miles always says, “Go to the library?” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Philippians 4:19

phillipians-4-19-copy

Melvin Newland, an Oklahoma minister, tells about a preacher friend of his who decided to keep track of all the questions he was asked and all the requests people made of him and the church for one week.

“When people stopped by to see him, what did they want? When people called him on the phone, what was on their mind? What was bothering them? What did the people really want?” Continue reading

Don’t Give Up

deshaun-watson

Last night’s College Football Championship game was one for the ages. It was a battle of wills. Mental toughness. Physical stamina. Emotional fortitude. And a never say die attitude.

In an upset, the Clemson Tigers scored the winning touchdown with one second left in the game to beat the favored Alabama Crimson Tide, 35-31. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Priorities

priorities

Clovis Chappell, a minister from the early 20th century, used to tell the story of two paddleboats. They left Memphis about the same time, traveling down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. As they traveled side by side, sailors from one vessel made a few remarks about the snail’s pace of the other.

Words were exchanged. Challenges were made. And the race began. Competition became vicious as the two boats roared down the mighty Mississippi. Continue reading

A Kind Word of Encouragement

My wife, Norma Jean, has a little devotional book that relates a neat story about a famous singer scheduled to perform in a Paris opera house. The event was sold out in a short time. Continue reading
