Are You Reading Your Bible?

Bible.HighlightedHave you seen this top 10 list regarding Bible reading?

You may not be reading your Bible enough IF…..

10) The Preacher announces the sermon is from Galatians….. and you check the table of contents.
9) You think Abraham, Isaac & Jacob may have had a few hit songs during the 60’s.
8) You open to the Gospel of Luke and a WWII savings bond falls out.
7) Your favorite Old Testament patriarch is Hercules.
6) Your favorite Bible verse is “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
5) You become frustrated because Charlton Heston isn’t listed in either the concordance or the table of contents.
4) Catching the kids reading the Song of Solomon, you demand: “Who gave you this stuff?”
3) You think the Minor Prophets worked in the quarries.
2) You keep falling for it every time when the preacher tells you to turn to First Condominiums.
And the number one sign you may not be reading your Bible enough:
1) The kids keep asking too many questions about your usual bedtime
story: “Jonah the Shepherd Boy and His Ark of Many Colors.”

Here’s another sign.  If it is too clean.  Too pristine.  Too unsoiled.  If it’s unmarked.  If it looks new, and it’s 10 years old.

I like to highlight in my Bible verses that “spark” me, or stand out in some special way.  In looking through a few chapters in Pslams, here are some that I’ve highlighted. And what they mean to me.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints” (116:15). This verse gives me comfort, consolation and hope as I think of loved ones that I miss.  My father.  My mother.  My brother. Uncles. Aunts. Cousins.

“The truth of the Lord endures forever” (117:2).  The shortest of the Psalms speaks a important fact.  Truth is absolute.  Unchanging.  Enduring.  It does not change with the year, decade, or century.

“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.  What can man do to me?”  (118: 6) What a comforting promise!  And a wonderful outlook on life.  Truly “it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”  (118:8)

“Oh give thanks to the Lord.  For He is good!  For His mercy endures forever.”  (118:29) I sure do need mercy! Every day! Thank you, Lord!

“In my distress, I cried to the LORD, And he heard me.” (120:1) You never have to suffer alone when you have the Lord.  And He’s always ready and willing to listen.

Don’t neglect Bible reading.  And don’t be afraid to make notes in your Bible.  Highlight verses.  And underline important thoughts to you. It will bless you now.  And in the future.

Psalm 116:15, it is so reassuring to know we are not alone when we die! I recall a wonderful elderly Christian man on his death bed, just moments before he left this world. Walt could not speak but kept pointing to the corner of his hospital room, radiant at such a painful moment from cancer. My husband and I told Walt we could not see anything…but Walt could! He closed his eyes and smiled. When we left his side, we knew Walt would not be alone at his final breath!

My favorite verses in Psalms that I have marked help to motivate me:
Psa. 71:17 & 18. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now when I am old and grey headed, O God, forsake me not until I have shown thy strength to this generation and thy power to everyone who is to come.
