IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Where The Way of the Cross Leads

Cross.Man.way

The  geographical  heart of 19th century London  was Charing Cross.  Locals just referred to it as “the Cross.”  There is a great story that circulated among evangelical preachers of that time about “the Cross.” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! God’s Gift of Grace

GRACE Cross

I’m  reading Perry Hall’s book “Grace Does That?”  In it he tells the story of  Charles Bradlaugh and Hugh Price Hughes.

Bradlaugh was the most prominent atheist in 19th century Britain.  On one occasion he challenged the evangelist Hughes to a debate on the validity of Christianity.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Remembering Jesus

communionTableFor as long as I can recall, going back to my childhood days, ingrained in my memory is the period of worship when we partake of the Lord’s supper.

I remember the solemnity of the occasion before I totally understood what it meant.  A song was sung “to prepare our minds.”   The men would go forward in suits and ties.  The one presiding would often read from I Corinthians 11 or one of the gospel accounts where Jesus instituted the supper.  Then make a few appropriate remarks. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! From Darkness To Light

Cross.Tomb.Darkness.Light

Lloyd Leavitt has lived all of his life in Barrow, Alaska.  For 57 years he has endured the cold.  The snow.  The sub-zero freeze that blankets the little town on the farthest northern tip of the state.  But he’ll tell you that what really gets to him are the weeks of continual darkness.

In Barrow the sun sets on November 18 and it doesn’t rise again until January 24th.  For sixty-five days the sun doesn’t shine!  “There comes a time,” Leavitt says, “when you don’t know if it’s morning or evening; you get confused.”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! In Honor and Memory of Ted Brewer

TedBrewer(This post was the second most viewed by our readers in2013)

I’ve said it before.  I hate death.  I hate the sorrow it brings.  I hate the emptiness it leaves.  I hate the relationships it ruptures.  I hate the burden it bears.

And Death ever lurks.  Looking over our shoulder.  Sneering. Leering.  Waiting to strike.  Leaving its hurt.  And about the time we’ve had some healing, death invades our homes and hearts again.

It seems to be happening all too often lately.  Last Sunday I received one of the calls.  I knew by the voice.  The tone.  The words that said, “Have you heard…..”  This time is was my friend Ted Brewer. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Inconsistency of Life

Jesus.Cross.Ressurection

“I suspect the most consistent thing about life has to be its inconsistency,” wrote Max Lucado in his classic book, “No Wonder They Call Him the Savior.”

“It’s this eerie inconsistency,” observes Max, “that keeps all of us, to one degree or another, living our lives on the edge of our chairs.”

“Yet, it was in this inconsistency that God had his finest hour. Never did the obscene come so close to the holy as it did on Calvary. Never did the good in the world so intertwine with the bad as it did on the cross” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Name Above All Names

Jesus.Names

It’s Friday.  And I’m concluding a meeting in Trenton, Florida.  Norma Jean and I have been blessed by the fellowship of the brethren here and the gracious hospitality of Ricky and Marchene Hudson.

All week I have been writing and sending my posts from their office.  And on the wall behind me is a poster entitled “And He Shall Be Called.”  On it are 58 titles and designations of Jesus that I want to share with you.  When the angel appeared to Joseph and said Mary had conceived a child of the Holy Spirit.  He said, “You shall call his name Jesus.  For he shall save his people from their sins.”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! A Time to Be Silent

jesusbeforepilat

In his book, The World of Silence, published in 1948, the  Swiss philosopher Max Picard opined: “Nothing has changed the nature of man so much as the loss of silence,” once as natural as the sky and air.”  I wonder what Max would think today?  With the constant chatter of our modern world of communication, there’s  not a lot silence!

There is an ancient proverb that says “Silence is golden.”  Sometimes it’s better to listen. To refrain from responding.  To ignore insults.  To turn a deaf ear to absurd accusations.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! What shall I do with Jesus?

Jesus.Pilate

Legendary football Coach Lou Holtz was in his first season at Arkansas.

The #6 Razorbacks were playing the #2 Oklahoma Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl. Both teams were 10-1, yet Arkansas was an 18-point underdog. But then Holtz suspended three top players for violation of team rules. Now Arkansas was a 24-point underdog!

Following the suspensions, the press was livid.  12 Arkansas  players threatened not to play. But Holtz didn’t back down. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Jesus the Messiah

Jesus.Messiah

He may not be the “Second Coming,” but his Mom thinks he’s pretty special!  And she believes she has the right to name her baby whatever she chooses!

Jalessa Martin, a Newport, Tennessee woman, recently sought a court order to establish paternity for her baby boy.  The request also included a ruling on the child’s last name, since Jalessa and the boy’s father couldn’t agree.

However,  Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew ordered the child’s first name changed when she learned the mother had named him “Messiah.” Continue reading
