Word of the Week: Victory

Nike

Twenty-five years ago the advertising agency of Wieden and Kennedy teamed up with a fast growing shoe company, Nike, to produce the most iconic slogan in all of sports “Just Do It.”

To celebrate and  commemorate this anniversary, Nike has recently launched a new ad campaign called “Possibilities.”  The first 90 second commercial featured NBA super-star LeBron James and Tennis champion Serena Williams with actor Bradley Cooper narrating.  More ads have been released in the past few weeks.

The “Possibilities” ads proclaim you are capable of more.  Push your perceived limitations.  Overcome your challenges.  Just Do It!

The commercials are engaging.  Motivating!  Inspiring! A brilliant move by Nike.   But do you know what Nike means? Did you know Nike is a Bible word? Continue reading

When Our Faith is on Trial

Trial“These are the times that try men’s souls,” wrote Founding Father Thomas Paine in The American Crisis, as he described the beginning of the American Revolution.

Today in America we face a different kind of trial.  A culture crisis.  A clash of thought.  Of Philosophy. Of basic beliefs. It is a culture war between the Judeo-Christian ethic on which our country was founded, and post-modernism, which rejects Christian values and seeks to eliminate religious thought from the public life. Can Anybody See God?

             A small boy once approached his slightly older sister with a question. “Susie, can anybody ever really see God?” he asked. Busy with other things, Susie curtly replied: “No, of course not, silly. God is so far up in heaven that nobody can see him.” Continue reading

Why Worry?

 

There is a great story that comes out of Greece in the 5th century B.C. During the war between two city-states, a spy was captured and sentenced to death. Before the execution he demanded an audience with the Ruler of that city. When the interview was granted, he stood before the Ruler and pled “O great king, if you do not execute me, but instead allow me to live a mere two years longer, I will teach your favorite horse to sing.” Continue reading

The Victory of Faith

Do you wear Nike shoes?  If you watch TV, I know you’ve seen a Nike commercial and heard the  slogan “Just Do It.”  But do you know what Nike means?  Did you know it is a Bible word?

In Greek mythology Nike was the goddess of victory, who presided over all military and athletic contests.  The Greek word nike” (nee’kay) is the word for victory in I John 5:4. “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.” Continue reading
