When You Care Enough to Encourage

card.hallmark2Kansas City, Missouri, is the home of Hallmark.  The company is over 100 years old.  And is an iconic presence in the metro area.  One of the members of our church family works there.  And by all indications Hallmark is a responsible corporate citizen in our community.

You’ve seen their touching commercials.  Received their wonderful cards.  And probably visited their unique stores.  You know they have a special product.  But the prolific author anonymous has composed a list of “Cards You’ll Never See at Hallmark.”  Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Encourage

Robinson.Reese

 This year is the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color-barrier to become the first African-American to play Major league baseball.   The release of the move “42″ and other MLB events have paid tribute to Robinson’s achievements.

His first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers was brutal.  Jackie faced hatred nearly everywhere he traveled. Pitchers threw fastballs at his head. Runners spiked him on the bases.  Ugly insults were hurled from the stands.  And opposing dugouts.  Even the home crowds in Brooklyn taunted him at times. Continue reading →

Refreshing Christians

Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus.

Do you know who they are? In what book of the Bible are they mentioned?  Old or New Testament?  You won’t find them in Hebrews 11–The Spiritual “Hall of Fame.”

More than likely they are reserved for the answer to a Bible Trivia game.  They are filed under Miscellaneous.  Unidentified. Or unknown.

Don’t Wait Until The Funeral

CookiesDid you hear about the man who was on his death-bed?  Suddenly the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies filled the air, wafting down the hall into his bedroom.  Mustering all the strength he could summons, he pulled himself out of bed, slowly staggered down the hall, and made it to the kitchen. Know Anyone Who Needs A Push?

Dave McNally, in his neat book “Even Eagles Need a Push,” tells about a man that is in bed with his wife when there is knocking on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock. It’s 3:30 AM.

“I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows. “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife. Continue reading →

The Nail

I recently came across a neat fable by the famous author anonymous.  It seems some Christians built a new church building and invited everyone to come see it. All admired its beauty. Up on the roof, a little nail heard the people praising everything about the new building. They praised everything but him. No one even knew he was there, and he became angry and jealous. “If I am that insignificant, nobody will miss me if I quit,” he said to himself. So the nail released its hold, slid down off the roof, and fell in the mud. Continue reading →

Encourage One Another

How long can you stand barefooted in a bucket of ice water?  Hadn’t thought about it, had you?  Well, believe it or not, a psychological group conducted an experiment several years ago using that very technique to measure people’s capacity to endure pain. They discovered one factor that caused people to stand in the ice water twice as long as others.  Can you guess what it was? Encouragement.  When another person was present during the experiment to lend support and give encouragement, the sufferers were able to endure pain much longer than those who had to suffer alone.
