Knowing When To Say “No”

Tuesday night I watched with interest several of the RNC speakers. The diversity was interesting.  Not only from the standpoint of race or gender, but of speaking style and content. Probably the most interesting contrasts were the final two speakers–Ann Romney and Governor Chris Christie.   Mrs. Romney presented a warm, personal and heart-felt plea for us to know her husband better.  And Christie was feisty, fervent and fiery in his presentation.  The governor had several quotable lines from his speech.  One that I particularly liked was this statement. Let Your Light Shine

Did you hear the joke about a circus owner who was walking down the street in a tourist district and saw crowd of people around a table watching a show.  On the table was  a pot turned upside down  and a duck tap dancing on it.  The circus owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner. After some haggling the owner agreed to sell the duck and the pot for $10,000.

A couple of days later the circus owner returns to the owner.  “Your duck is a  rip-off!”  He says angrily.  “I put him on the pot in front of a big audience and he didn’t dance  a single step!” Continue reading

Be All That You Can Be

John Mason wrote a fine little book entitled “Conquering an Enemy Called Average.”  Each chapter is only two pages, but it is filled with wonderful nuggets of wisdom.  In chapter 42 he simply lists some things we should be.  In looking at these again I noticed how each one involves a Biblical command or principle. So, I’ve added some verses to these for your consideration and encouragement. Continue reading

Don’t Drop The Ball!

“He dropped the ball,” is an American idiom we use to  describe someone who didn’t do the job right.  Or  failed to complete an assignment.  Or can’t be depended on.  Or blundered in some way.  It means to make an error, or to miss an opportunity.  For instance, we say “the goal was in sight, but John dropped the ball.” Do you know where the expression originated? Continue reading

Which Road Will You Take?

We are in the heat of baseball season.  Literally!  This year the All-Star game is coming to Kansas City.  Norma Jean and I were down on the Plaza Friday night and noticed it is filled with All-Star information.  Signs.  Promotions.  Pictures.  You name it.  One of my favorite Baseball All-Stars was Yogi Berra. Continue reading

Who Do You Work For?

During the past three weeks in Kansas City, we’ve met a lot of new people. Especially those in our church family at Hickman Mills.  As you to get to know people, and build relationships, one of the first questions often asked is “Where do you work?”  Sometimes we simply ask, “What do you do?” And it is understood that you asking about their job, profession or business. Continue reading

ARE YOU CRUISING?

Isn’t cruise control a great invention? I don’t take a lot of long trips by automobile, but when I do it’s a great feature to have. On our trip last week from Tampa to Kansas City there were mainly interstate highways. Fortunately, the traffic wasn’t very heavy. So, I kept it on cruise control most of the time. The drive was pleasant. We just cruised along. Continue reading

Can Anybody See God?

A small boy once approached his slightly older sister with a question. “Susie, can anybody ever really see God?” he asked. Busy with other things, Susie curtly replied: “No, of course not, silly. God is so far up in heaven that nobody can see him.” Continue reading

Just Be Nice!

While we were packing the other day our son, Kenny, came across a bumper sticker that read, “Just be nice.”    Three simple words. Yet profound in their understanding and powerful in their application. Continue reading

Who Says So?

What do you say when you talk to yourself?  Come on!  Admit it!  You know you do.  We all do.  We are constantly talking to ourselves.  Thinking.  Imagining.  Reflecting.  Telling ourselves what we want to hear.  Continue reading
