Growing in Grace

John Houseman was a British-American actor and producer who was hired to do commercials for the investment firm Smith-Barney in the 1980’s.

Looking immaculate in his 3 piece suit, he spoke with confidence and authority as he sternly looked into the camera and with his gravelly voice affirmed, “Smith-Barney. They make money the old fashioned way. They earn it.”

That’s a great motto for an investment company. And wonderful advice for accumulating wealth. However, it’s not the way we need to approach salvation and our relationship with God. Continue reading

Greetings from Beverly Hills,  FL

Happy Earth Day!  Yes, it’s a  thing. April 22 is “Earth Day.”  You can read about it on their official web page.

Each Saturday when I send out this recap, I always include a past post as a bonus. Today’s is from April, 22, 2014,  The Preacher’s Perspective on Earth Day.  For my preaching colleagues, the 5 points would actually put you on second base for a sermon on stewardship. Continue reading

Today’s post is a collection of captions, quotes and memes from various sources.

We begin with a question Wilson Adams asked in the prelude to a serious post.

How many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb? Continue reading

When John 3:16 is Objectionable

Rollen Stewart became known as the John 3:16 guy. Remember him?

Stewart wore a rainbow colored wig and attended sporting events either wearing a T-shirt or holding up a sign that read “John 3:16.” At football games, he would often be sitting behind the goal posts, or a baseball game behind home plate, so the cameras would televise his message. Continue reading

Greetings from Miami, Florida.

Last night we concluded a meeting at the Carol City Church and are headed home today.

We’ve been with these brethren on previous occasions, so it was enjoyable to return and renew our relationships.  Our friend, Donald Jackson ,is the preacher at Carol City and is always very gracious when we are with him and his lovely and hospitable wife, Gwen.   She’s the daughter of the late and well known evangelist F. O. White, who preached here for many years. Continue reading

Happiness. Anger. And Social Media.

Some time ago, Doy Moyer, preacher and professor at Florida College, posted a piece about happiness as it relates to some of the ranting we witness on social media.

“There is a universal desire for happiness, but since happiness is so elusive, people have instead embraced anger and have given in to the hopelessness and bitterness that come with it.” Continue reading

Staying Alive in a Dead Church

Ross Sams, Jr. shared this true story about a neighbor’s cat that was run over by car.

When the mother was told of the accident she quickly disposed of the remains before her four year old son, Billy, found about it.

After a few days, though, Billy finally asked about the cat.

“Billy, the cat died,” his mother explained. “But it’s all right. He’s up in heaven with God.” Continue reading
