Philippians 3:12-14

The late Herb Caen was a journalist and humorist who wrote a a daily column for the San Francisco Chronicle. He once wrote this humorous piece.

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle; when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” Continue reading

“Don’t Wait To Do Something”

While Jon Rahm won the Masters golf tournament Sunday, Texas A&M amateur golfer, Sam Bennett also made national headlines.

Reuters reported that Bennett has tattooed on his forearm, “Don’t wait to do something.”

Apparently these were his father’s last words before he died of Alzheimer’s in 2021. Continue reading

Growth Requires Meditation

Readers Digest once shared a story about the time Henry Ford hired an efficiency expert to evaluate his company. After a few weeks, the expert made his report, which was highly favorable except for one thing.

“It’s that man down the hall,” said the expert. “Every time I go by his office he’s just sitting there with his feet on his desk. He’s wasting your money.” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: April 3-7

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Norma Jean and I are preparing to leave for Miami, where I will be preaching in a meeting for the Carol City Church, April 9-14.  It’s one of the few week long meetings I do with 8 lessons, If you’re within driving distance, we’d love to see you.

Today’s post is a recap of the past week with its live links, provided in case you may have missed a post.

I don’t know about my fellow bloggers, but I often post something that I think should receive more hits than it does.  This week the #1 most read post was Psalm 71, followed by Discovering Purpose Beyond Yourself.  Coming in third was 10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry, which I thought would be a runaway #1 in terms of reader views.  So, many of you missed it.  I hope you will read it. And share it. Continue reading

Our God Is An Awesome God

“One of my pet peeves is today’s casual use of the word ‘awesome.’ Many things are called awesome that are not at all awesome but very ordinary,” posted my facebook friend Michael D. Greene.  “Awesome should be reserved for things that truly inspire or move us to awe.”

I share in Michael’s feelings about the word “Awesome.”  To illustrates what is truly awe inspiring Michael shared a piece from his friend John Gott, who works in the field of science, that ought to inspire us to awe as it deals with the awesome power of the God we serve. Continue reading

10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry

On this day in history, April 6th, the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympics was reborn in Athens at the Panathenaic Stadium.

When we were in Athens several years ago, Norma Jean and I visited the Stadium, the only one in the world built entirely of marble. It was originally built in the 4th century B.C. Rebuilt in 144 B.C. Then excavated in 1869, and hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896.

When we visited, I wondered if the apostle Paul might have visited this Stadium. As he walked around Athens, seeing the many monuments erected in honor of their gods, it’s both possible and probable. Continue reading

Psalm 71

Jeff Foxworthy, dubbed “The Redneck Comedian,” and known for his one-liners, has a skit called “You Know You’re Not a Kid Anymore When…”

…You quit trying to hold in your stomach, no matters who enters the room.

…You enjoy watching the news.

…People ask what color your hair used to be. Continue reading

Discovering Purpose Beyond Yourself

I recently came across an old Calvin and Hobbes cartoon that went like this.

Calvin: I’m at peace with the world and I’m completely serene.

Hobbes: Why is that?

Calvin: Because I’ve discovered my purpose in life. I know why I was put here and why everything exists. Continue reading

Focus on Self-Development, Not Self-Fulfillment

“Something in human nature tempts us to stay where we’re comfortable,” wrote the late Fred Smith, a Dallas businessman and board member of Christianity Today.

In an article in Leadership Magazine Smith wrote about “Training to Reach the Top.” The theme and thesis of his article spoke to the importance of personal growth, getting out of one’s comfort zone and development in the business world, especially for those in leadership positions.
