Who’s Your God?

James Michener, in his book, The Source, tells the story of a man named Urbaal, a farmer who lived about 2200 B.C. He worshiped two gods. The god of death and the goddess of fertility.

One day, the temple priests tell Urbaal to bring his young son to the temple for sacrifice, if he wants good crops. Continue reading →

As We Eat the Lord’s Supper

Today, am I worshiping with the brethren in Kettering, Ohio.  It brings back fond  memories.  I used to preach here.  We were a young married couple and Kenny was just a baby when we came.  The brethren were good to us.  And they gave us an opportunity to learn. To grow.  To minister.  And so I come back to preach in a meeting. But on this day, I will join with them in eating the Lord’s Supper.  Continue reading →

The Storms of Life

I have been watching Fox News on and off all day reporting on the storms tearing across states from the Gulf Coast to Great Lakes. Over 74 storms have been reported.  Powerful tornadoes have ripped roofs off of houses.  Downed trees. Damaged businesses.  Destroyed schools.  The town of “Maryville(Indiana) is completely gone,” said Clark County Sheriff Department Maj. Chuck Adams.  Wiped away by the fierce winds. Henryville, Indiana, suffered extensive damage.  Continue reading →

Know Who You Are and Where You’re Going

Wednesday Night Norma and I visited the Henderson Boulevard church here in Tampa. .  I like the fellowship at Henderson and they were having a special series with Paul Sheehan.  The singing was spirited. The fellowship was warm.  And the worship was God centered.  None of this was unexpected.  Nor was the unique style with which Paul presents the Gospel.  I liked his lesson.  A lot. And want to share some of my thoughts from it.  Continue reading →

A Foolish Exchange

Do you ever read “news of the weird” that tells about those “stupid criminals” stories?  Here’s a good one.

A man walked into a convenience store, put a $20 bill on the counter and asked for change. When the clerk opened the drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register.  The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving his $20 bill on the counter. Continue reading →

Mercy!

“Mercy!’ is an expression sometimes used by people to indicate great emotion.  I’ve heard folks say, “Mercy, Me!”  But mercy is one of great spiritual qualities we need to understand and apply in our lives. Continue reading →

We Need Friends

I’ve been thinking about friendships. Norma and I spent last week-end with our special friends Steve and Theresa McAllister. We’ve known each other since the mid 1970’s. They are “forever friends.” The kind that even though you may not see each other for a while, you can just pick up where you left off and have a great time together. Being with them just reminded me about the beauty, the joy and value of good friendships. Continue reading →

Christians and Pop Culture

In a Washington Post article, February 23, 2012, about the recent abortion debate in Virginia, the Post reported how lawmakers had been ridiculed and lampooned on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” The article quoted Steve Jarding, a professor at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Democratic consultant who has run campaigns in Virginia. He made a very telling statement that speaks to the mentality of the masses today when he said, “You never want to get on the wrong side of popular culture. When people are laughing at you, you know you’ve gone too far.” Continue reading →
