Human Weakness. God’s Grace. And Forgiveness.

Pride.Humility

What do you believe is our greatest human weakness?

Is it pride that refuses to admit mistakes, sins and errors of judgment?

Is it greed that is absorbed in the accumulation of money and material possessions?

Is it lust that is in mad pursuit of pleasure and sensual excitement?

Maybe you’re thinking it’s anger.  Envy.  Or deceit.

Let me suggest that is it none of the above.  The greatest human weakness is….. Continue reading

Ingredients for a Tasty Life!

Taste.The.Lord

“100 Places To Eat Before You Die” shouted the internet headline! I like to eat, so I read to see what I had been missing! Fortunately, one is right here in Kansas City, Oklahoma Joe’s. It’s bar-b-que. And it’s really good!

I got to thinking how much focus America puts on food. We love to eat! And we love to eat out.   We love our burgers and fries. Steaks and seafood. And chicken fixed a 100 different ways.    Continue reading

Near to the Heart of God

IMG_0820

Cleland McAfee was a preacher and song writer from Parkville, Mo,.  He lived in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  He was known for often writing his own songs that fit the theme of a sermon he was preaching.  In 1903 he suffered the tragic loss of two infant nieces to diphtheria.

His daughter, in her book Near to the Heart of God, describes what happened. Continue reading

Do You Know Who Are You?

IdentityFriedrich Schleiermacher was an 18th century German philosopher and theologian.  He became famous for trying to reconcile the criticisms of The Enlightenment with “traditional Protestant Christianity.”  He is often called “the Father of modern liberal theology.”

The story is told that one day as an old man he was sitting alone on a bench in a city park. A policeman saw him and thought he was a vagrant.  So he came over, shook him and asked, “Who are you?” Schleiermacher sadly replied, “I wish I knew.”  Continue reading

Giving God Pleasure in 2014

GodsPleasureIn twenty days we will turn the page on 2013 to 2014.  You know what that means, don’t you?  New Year’s Resolutions!

Typically resolutions go like this. “In 2014 I resolve to….. go on a diet.  Exercise three times a week.  Pay off my credit cards.  Text less.  Read the Bible daily.  Pray daily.  Be a better Christian.

So how did  that approach work for you  this year?  How many resolutions survived the first month?  Or the first week? Continue reading

Life Lessons Learned from a Walking Trail

Hiking.Blue.Ridge

Yesterday Norma Jean and I spent the day driving the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The leaves appear to be at their peak and it is gorgeous.  But to break up the drive we stopped at Mount Mitchell and walked to the top.  It’s the highest peak East of the Mississippi.

We also stopped at Linville Falls and hiked from the Ranger station to the Falls.  The trail was rocky.  Uneven.  And overgrown with roots.  There were places where the trail was slippery.  Rugged.  And steep.  In fact, it was uphill…both ways!  Continue reading

Today We Sail On!

Sailing

Yesterday’s facebook “Perryism”, posted by my friend  Perry Hall: “Columbus Day, the day we celebrate a man who got lost and didn’t stop to ask directions.”

Well, Perry, I’m not so sure there was much celebrating yesterday!   Except for banks being closed and not receiving any mail, I really couldn’t tell it was a holiday!  Of course, Columbus Day is about as popular today in the media as the NFL Washington Redskins.

Yet, Columbus was a great explorer.  And while we bear the name of Amerigo Vespucci, who reached the continental mainland in 1497, Christopher Columbus is honored and remembered for discovering “the New World.” Continue reading

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

Bible.Soldier

There is a war that is raging!  We can deny it.  Dismiss it.  Or Ignore it.  But the war is real.  The battles are intense.  And the conflicts impact us all.

The war I’m writing about today is not in Afghanistan.  Syria.  Or Kenya .  I’m not discussing current culture wars in America.  Nor am I referring to the conflicts between political parties, or the battles between the White House and Congress.

The war that concerns me is more serious than all of those combined.  Continue reading

Are You Willing to Die for Jesus?

A Kenyan policeman walks inside the African Inland Church after an attack in Garissa

(During the Holiday season we are reblogging the top 9 post of 2013.  Based on the number of “hits” this one came in at #8)

From Pakistan to Egypt.  From Kenya to Syria.  And all across the Muslim world it has been an “open season on Christians.”  Seventy-eight people professing Christianity were slaughtered Sunday by twin suicide bombers at a church in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

In a Kenyan shopping mall, a gang of Islamic extremists from Somalia murdered at least 68 workers and shoppers.  Reportedly they shouted for “Muslims to get out-of-the-way so they could specifically kill Christians.” Continue reading
