Introduction to a New Column

Like other preachers, writers and bloggers, we have at times addressed the problems of social media, including platforms like facebook.

Too often social media is abused and misused by wasting time surfing through its endless posts. Or engaging in heated arguments, hurling unkind and ugly retorts. Posting immodest pictures. Or just being trivial and frivolous.

However, there is a good side to social media. The Gospel of Christ can be preached. Encouragement offered. Prayers requested. Brethren connected around the world. Bible study material shared. And important thoughts posted that ennoble and inspire us. Continue reading

What Guides My Life?

The church where I currently preach, Hickman Mills church of Christ, in Kansas City, MO, recently presented a special series called “Week-End in the Word.” The theme was Bible Answers To Tough Questions. The speaker invited to address these questions was Dan DeGarmo from Chillicothe, Ohio.

The questions included, “Why Bad Things Happen to good people” How should I Respond to Terror?” “Who Am I? And “God, What Do You See in Me?”

In my mind the key question, answered Sunday morning, was “What Guides My Life?” This answer impacts the answers to all other questions. Continue reading

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

There is a war that is raging!  We can deny it.  Dismiss it.  Or Ignore it.  But the war is real.  The battles are intense.  And the conflicts impact us all.

The war I’m writing about today is not in Afghanistan.  Syria.  Or Kenya .  I’m not discussing current culture wars in America.  Nor am I referring to the conflicts between political parties, or the battles between the White House and Congress.

The war that concerns me is more serious than all of those combined.  Continue reading
