Yesterday I was reading a story about the owner of an estate that was hiring workers.  He went out and very early in the morning and found several qualified for the job.  They agreed on $75 for a full day’s work.  Continue reading

My “Elijah Experience” On Mount Carmel

Jeff Stride tells a great  story about a young man who joined the military and had just entered boot camp.
On the first morning, the unit was awakened early,  dragged out of bed, and  made to assemble outside by the drill sergeant.  Seeking to instill fear in the recruits, the sergeant stood in front of soldiers and snarled at them: “My name’s Sergeant Jackson. Is there anyone here thinks he can whip me?”
Incredibility a young man raised his hand!!!
The Sergeant walked right over to the new recruit. And there stood the private.  All 6′ 5′ and  280 pounds of him.  The drill sergeant  looked him dead in the eye and with all the malice he could muster repeated “So you think you can whip me, soldier?” Continue reading

Which Road Will You Take?

We are in the heat of baseball season.  Literally!  This year the All-Star game is coming to Kansas City.  Norma Jean and I were down on the Plaza Friday night and noticed it is filled with All-Star information.  Signs.  Promotions.  Pictures.  You name it.  One of my favorite Baseball All-Stars was Yogi Berra. Who Do You Work For?

During the past three weeks in Kansas City, we’ve met a lot of new people. Especially those in our church family at Hickman Mills.  As you to get to know people, and build relationships, one of the first questions often asked is “Where do you work?”  Sometimes we simply ask, “What do you do?” And it is understood that you asking about their job, profession or business. You Be Jesus

One of my favorite stories is about the mother who was preparing pancakes for her two sons, Kevin, age 5, and Ryan, age 3.  As the boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake, she saw an opportunity to teach a spiritual lesson.  Continue reading

ARE YOU CRUISING?

Isn’t cruise control a great invention? I don’t take a lot of long trips by automobile, but when I do it’s a great feature to have. On our trip last week from Tampa to Kansas City there were mainly interstate highways. Fortunately, the traffic wasn’t very heavy. So, I kept it on cruise control most of the time. The drive was pleasant. We just cruised along. Continue reading

The Delight and Danger of Curiosity

A school teacher was finishing up a lesson on the joys of discovery and the importance of curiosity.  “Where would we be today, she asked, “if no one had ever been curious?

One child quietly spoke up from the back of the room.  “In the garden of Eden?” Continue reading

The Memory of the Righteous

Memory can  be a wonderful blessing.  It can bring smiles, laughs, or even tears of joy as we look at pictures, share stories, or just think about the good times of by gone days.  One writer said, “Memory is the way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.” Continue reading
