IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! He Bore It All

JesusBoreItAll

The eulogy at the Lord’s Supper is often composed of a scripture reading and a song.  Two of the most common that are related in thought are Isaiah 53 and “He Bore it All.”

Prophetically Isaiah paints a picture of the suffering Servant as “a man of sorrows.”  “Acquainted with grief.”  “Despised and rejected by men.”  The suffering and shame that the Savior endured touches our hearts. Weighs heavy on our minds.  And reaches down into the depths of our souls.  It  reminds us that we are the reason Jesus died.     Continue reading

Happiness and Holiness Go Together

Happiness.3Yesterday’s post, “Happiness is a Choice, spoke to the importance of true happiness. Not a pseudo happiness based on the world’s definition, but a happiness that is spiritually focused.  Biblically-based.  And God directed.

Today I want to share a piece written from a little different angle by Rubel Shelly.  While my views on some other spiritual matters might differ from Shelly’s , I found this interesting, insightful and challenging.  I hope you do too! Continue reading

Happiness is a Choice!

Bruce Bakker is a friend of mine. Along with his wife, Barbara, and their daughter, Kim, He’s a part of the Church-Family where I preach. And one of the most cheerful guys I know!

Yesterday he had hip replacement surgery. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone go into surgery with a more positive attitude than Bruce. He was jovial. Joyful. And positive. Plus he had that big, infectious smile on his face. Continue reading

A Drastic Change!

Weather.KaleeDionne

Wow!  I awoke this morning to find that Fall is gone and Winter has come to Kansas  City!  The thermometer on my porch reads 20 degrees!

So, I turned to Action 41 Weather to learn what was going on. With charts and graphics, Meteorologist Kalee Dionne  explained it had something to do with a cold Arctic air mass dipping down into the United States.  Well, I believe it! And Kalee didn’t make me feel better my reporting it was actually 18 in Lee’s Summit with a wind chill of 7 degrees!  Brrrr! Continue reading

Word of the Week: Soldier

Flag.Bible.SwordIn November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as “Armistice Day.”  It was hailed as a day of reflection to honor those who served in the military, both living and dead, at the end of World War I.

While the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until seven month later, the fighting ceased between the Allied nations and Germany on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Jesus: A Dangerous Man

Jesus.DangerousManThe most dangerous idea in human history and philosophy remains the belief that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and rose from the dead. And that is the most dangerous idea you will ever encounter.”

These words were those spoken by Peter Hitchens, who served on a panel for the Australian TV show “Q&A, Adventures in Democracy,” which was broadcast from the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Monday, November 4, 2013.  Other panelists included feminist Germaine Greer, writer Hanna Rosin and homosexual activist, Dan Savage. God Calls Christians “To Belong”

Belong

It was one rainy day. In fact, it was more than rainy. It was a storm. The winds were blowing fiercely. The rains were descending in sheets. Thunder roared.  And lightening was flashing.   There were just a few people in the Officer’s Club.  An Army Chaplain and two officer’s wives were watching the storm through the big picture window.

Suddenly, through a flash of lightning, one of the women saw a solider standing outside on guard duty totally at the mercy of the raging storm. The Chaplain then overheard this exchange from the women. Continue reading

Can We Be Like the Jerusalem Church?

RestoringFocus.2013

The 2013 theme of the Hickman Mills church where I preach has been RESTORING OUR FOCUS.

In yesterday’s post on “minister” I mentioned a different emphasis we had each month this year.  One of our new readers asked if I would list the other goals that we have been focused on for the year.  I thought others might like to know about the process in which we have been engaged.  Continue reading

Minister

“Making a Difference Through Ministry” is the November focus for the Hickman Mills church where I preach in Kansas City.  Each month this year we’ve been focusing on a different purpose God has for His people.  Yesterday, I preached on ministry.  Wrote about ministry.  Lead a small group to begin a new ministry.  Yes, I’ve got ministry on my mind!  So…..
