Guard Your Heart

Guard Your Heart

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) heart disease continues to be the number one cause of death in the United States.

Heart disease claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer. This is true for both men and women. Not surprisingly both our federal government and the heath care industry is very proactive in educating the public about heart problems. We are warned about habits that harm the heart. About foods that are unhealthy. The importance of physical exercise. And the need for medical checkups. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs 4.23

Remember Steve Irwin? The Crocodile Hunter? He lived life on the edge. And his shows were exciting to watch. Do you recall how he died?

Many people thought a crocodile would finally take his life, or at least claim a limb. Irwin survived many dangers. Countless snake bites. Being chased up a tree by a deadly Komodo dragon. Spat on by a red spitting cobra. And being pulled into the water by a massive crocodile. But none of those claimed his life. Continue reading

Presbyterians Push to Redefine Marriage

Presbyterian Leaders

According to the Christian Post , March 9, 2015, “The largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States is only seven votes away from having enough regional bodies favor changing its official definition of marriage to include homosexual unions.”

“At last year’s general assembly, Presbyterian Church (USA) approved an amendment changing their Book of Order’s definition of marriage from being between ‘a man and a woman’ to ‘two people’, traditionally a man and a woman.” Continue reading

WORD OF THE WEEK: GRACE

Grace.Word Week

The New York Times editorial headlined it as “A Moment of Grace.” The article began with this observation:

“In an age whose crabbed sense of justice finds expression in dismal phrases like “zero tolerance” and “three strikes and you’re out,” the events in a Long Island courtroom on Monday came as an undeserved gift, something startling and luminous.”

It all began when Ryan Cushing and 5 other teens went out “for a night of joy riding and crime.” After stealing a credit card, they bought some DVD’s, video games and then some food at the grocery store. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! What Did Jesus Call Himself?

Jesus.Names.2

Francis Derek claims there are 272 different names, titles and designations for Jesus in the Bible. I’m not sure I would be that specific! But there are at least over 200. They’re names of Christ in prophesy. Names that have to do with types and symbols. And there are unique names in the New Testament.

Throughout this year we want to consider some of the those names and see the importance of His name. He is Wonderful. He is our Advocate. He is called Christ. But what did Jesus call himself? Continue reading

Come To Jesus–Or I’ll Beat You Up?

Connect

My son, Kenny, recently sent me this unbelievable news article from the Tampa Bay Times:

A Boise woman is facing charges after police say she attacked a Jewish acquaintance and beat her as part of a bizarre bid to convert her to Christianity.

Marguerite Haragan, 59, showed up at the victim’s home on Feb 5. Haragan “was banging on the front window yelling at her that she better believe in Jesus and she was not going to leave until she did believe in Jesus,” Ada County Prosecutor Dave Roscheck said. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1John 5:4

Victory.Nike

Nike, the brand that Michael Jordan built, is still flying high.

The famous shoe company announced the release of their new Flyknit Lunar3 this month. It’s lightweight. The colors are bright. But most of all wearing them will put you in the winner’s circle!

Nike is the most innovative shoe company of our time. And their slogan, Just Do It, captures our interest, captivates our imagination and creates a desire for kids to wear their brand.

But did you know that Nike is a Bible word? It’s found in one of the great verses of the Bible, I John 5:4. Continue reading

Made For Another World

World.Gazing

Last night I woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep. So I got up, ate a piece of toast and drank a glass of warm milk. (I read somewhere on the internet where that would help you sleep. So it must be true!)

After checking my email, which you’re not supposed to do, I decided to read for a while. I picked up a book and came across two great quotes, one by John Piper and the other by C. S. Lewis.

Piper wrote, “The greatest hindrance to worship is not that we are a pleasure-seeking people, but that we are willing to settle for such pitiful pleasures.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Watch

WATCH

Once there was a little boy, Ryan, who wanted a watch.

Day in and day out Ryan pestered his parents about getting him a watch. His parents put him off every way they could. Finally he drove his parents to the breaking point. His father told the youngster that he didn’t want to hear another word about a watch from him.

Well, for the rest of that week the Ryan said nothing about a watch. He knew that to do so would certainly result in his parents’ displeasure and probably some discomfort for him! Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Celebration. Crucifixion. Coronation.

Jesus.Life

“When life changes to be harder, change yourself to be stronger. Our challenges are what mold us, refine us, and make us into all we were intended to become.” (Zig Ziglar)

Life does change. Challenges do come. And how quickly they can occur! Indeed the classic old hymn is right, “Time is filled with swift transition.”

We’ve all experienced it. That heart-rending phone call with a sobbing voice on the other end with tragic news. The results of a test and the Doctor’s unfavorable prognosis. The husband announces that he’s leaving to the shock of his wife and children. A close associate who betrays your trust. A once devoted friend who cowardly leaves when you need him the most. Continue reading
