Word of the Week: Conviction

G. Campbell Morgan tells a story about the great English actor William Charles Macready who was once approached by an eminent preacher of his day.

“I wish you would explain to me something,” asked the preacher.

Well, what is it? I don’t know that I can explain anything to a preacher,” replied Macready. Continue reading

Judgment Day is Coming

W. C. Fields (1880-1946) was an American comedian, actor, and writer. He was quick with a witty quip. And could make audiences roar with laughter. Ironically it is said that Fields was “chronically unhappy. “

As an avowed atheist, religion played no part in Field’s life. He “regarded all religions with the suspicion of a seasoned con man.”

However, late in his life when he faced the reality of death, the story is told of a friend visiting Fields and found him reading the Bible. Continue reading

Would You Help a Drowning Stranger?

“I’m going to die,” Roberta Ursrey thought to herself. “My family is going to die this way.”

Ursrey, who had just moved to Florida a month ago, was at Panama City Beach Saturday night, with her husband, mother, nephew and two sons, Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8. The boys had gotten separated while chasing waves on a boogie board. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 13:34

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”

These words are the familiar opening lines of Elisabeth Barrett Browning’s famous 43rd sonnet. What may not be as familiar to most people is Browning’s background.

She was a frail, sick woman who was dominated by a possessive father. She spent most of her time alone in an upstairs room medicated by opium. Elisabeth’s one outlet, producing joy, was her poetry. Continue reading

How Gullible Are We?

Yesterday my phone kept dinging because everyone was warning me about accepting a facebook friend request from Jayden K. Smith, an alleged hacker who’s going to corrupt my computer, hack my friend’s accounts, and probably drain my bank account.

You got a few dings too, eh?

Well, by now, you probably know this was a hoax.

It reminded me of this true story that occurred in the late 1990’s. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Knowledge

Ray Comfort in his book, Hell’s Best Kept Secret, relates a tragic story about a woman who was once walking along a riverbank with her child.

Suddenly the child slipped into the river. The mother screamed in terror. She couldn’t swim, and besides, she was in the latter stages of pregnancy. Finally, somebody heard her screaming and rushed down to the riverbank. Continue reading

Will Your Church Teach the Truth?

The Church of England, according to a report by The Telegraph, appears ready to condemn so-called “controversial cures” and therapy for homosexuals. This follows a recent statement by Prime Minister, Theresa May, saying they could be banned.

“The General Synod will vote on a motion to endorse a statement by psychology experts that conversion therapy, which uses methods including prayer and aversion therapy in an attempt to stop people being homosexual, is ‘unethical, harmful and not supported by evidence’”. Continue reading

4 Steps to Overcoming Temptation

I recently read about a little plant that grows in the Australian bush country called the “sundew.” It has a slender stem and tiny, round leaves fringed with hairs that glisten with bright drops of liquid as delicate as fine dew. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 119:60

“Instant obedience is the only kind of obedience there is; delayed obedience is disobedience,” wrote Thomas ‘a Kempis, the 15th century Scribe noted for his famous work The Imitation of Christ.

Oswald Chambers expressed it this way. “One step forward in obedience is worth years of study about it.” Continue reading
