Word of the Week: Responsibility

A man accused of petty theft, went before the Judge and was asked, “How do you plead?”

“Not guilty,” replied the thief.

“On what grounds?” asked the Judge

“Well, your honor, my arm reached through an open window and took a few trifling things. My arm isn’t really who I am. Surely you are not going to punish me for an offense committed by a single limb?” Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Are Your Eyes On Jesus?

A man was on trial for murder. There was strong circumstantial evidence indicating his guilt, but there was no corpse. So in his closing statement the defense attorney resorted to a trick.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I have a surprise for you,” the lawyer said as he looked at his watch. “Within one minute the person presumed dead in this case will walk into this courtroom.” Continue reading

Here’s a post from the past for all of our new readers. And I hope our long time readers profit from reading it again. Have a great day!

The  geographical  heart of 19th century London  was Charing Cross.  Locals just referred to it as “the Cross.”  There is a great story that circulated among evangelical preachers of that time about “the Cross.”

The Need To Be Reminded

Our Wednesday night the adult class where I preach at West Main is studying Peter’s epistles and is being taught very ably by one of our young men, Zach Kelsey.

Last night we were covering the text in 2 Peter 1:12-15 where Peter said that it was important to remind his readers of the Truth, although they knew it and were established in it. After discussing why that is necessary, Zach asked, “What are some ways in which we can be reminded of the Truth?’ Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Hebrews 12:1

In the 1968 Mexico City Olympics John Stephen Akhwari represented Tanzanai in the marathon. Along the course Akhwari stumbled and fell, severely injuring his knee and ankle. But he kept on running.

Hours after an Ethiopian runner had won, Akhwari limped into the Olympic stadium. Only a few thousand spectators were left, but they began to cheer the courageous Tanzanian. Bloodied, bruised and bandaged he grimaced with every step as he completed the final lap of the race.

Later, a reporter asked Akhwari, “Why did you continue the race after you were so badly injured?” Continue reading

Respecting Authority

It doesn’t appear that the vitriol toward our newly elected President is going to disappear anytime soon.

In his latest music video Snoop Dogg literally takes aim at President Trump with a gun pointed at a clown dressed like the President. The rapper listed many of his grievances with the President including his travel ban, “people being in jail for weed” and of course, just winning the Presidency itself. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Time

Saturday night we set our clocks up one hour to begin the semi-annual debate about Daylight Saving Time.

Some like it. Others loathe it.

President Harry Truman called it “a monstrosity in time keeping.”

Benjamin Franklin justified Daylight Saving Time as having “the pure light of the sun for nothing,” as opposed to burning expensive candles. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Influencing Others

In his book, It’s All About The People, Dee Bowman tells a great story about E. J. Nichols from Dickens County, Texas. Dee describes him as “a strong man spiritually.” He says he was “rather rough around the edges but there was a gentleness about him, too.” Continue reading

Clarification and Observations Regarding The Arrested Evangelists Post

Last week before leaving for Portland I posted about two British Evangelists being arrested for preaching Jesus. I have returned to learn that post has received an incredible amount of impassioned response. It has been shared over 10,000 times on facebook and has been viewed over 80,000 times on our blog site.

Here’s some context. Following by some important observations.
