The Paradox of Every Generation

paradox

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” so begins Charles Dickens historical novel A Tale of Two Cities. In fact, on this day in 1859 the final chapter was published in Dickens’ circular, “All the Year Round.”

The opening line has been often quoted to apply to our generation. It has been many years since I’ve read this classic, and had forgotten the next lines in the opening paragraph. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Mission

mission

The story is told of a truck driver who was hauling 10 penguins to the zoo. Unfortunately, his truck broke down. He eventually waved down another truck and offered the driver $500 to take the penguins to the zoo.

Later that day the first truck driver got his truck fixed and drove into town but couldn’t believe his eyes! Just ahead of him he saw the second truck driver crossing the road with the 10 penguins waddling single file behind him. He jumped out of his truck, ran up to the guy and said, “What’s going on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the zoo!” Continue reading

Giving or Receiving?

“One can worship God by himself, but not for long. The secret of our religion is that we get the most out of it when we are giving the most.” (Fitzgerald) Continue reading

Love Trumps Hate

Pumping their fists in the air and marching through the streets, hundreds of people  in cities all across the country from Los Angeles to New York, have been heard chanting “Love Trumps Hate.”

Predictably these protestors are upset about the results of an orderly, democratic election in the United States on Tuesday. Specifically, they are challenging the President-elect Donald Trump. Continue reading

7 Things Unchanged By The Election

trump-victory-speech

Surprising. Shocking. Stunning.   These words have repeatedly been used to describe the reaction to Donald Trump’s upset Presidential victory.

Pundits who were pontificating with their predictions of a Clinton landslide were reduced to “eating crow.” Media elites, far left liberals and entertainment stars are red faced and scratching their heads wondering “What happened?” Continue reading

Great Verses Of The Bible: Psalm 47:8

ps47-8

“Are you staying up?” my wife, Norma Jean asked, as she left the family room heading to the bedroom.

“I’m going to give it until 10:30,” I replied. “If there’s not a winner. I’m coming to bed. I can find out who won in the morning.”

And so I awake, along with many surprised Americans, to learn that billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump is now President-elect of the United States of America.

ThePreachersWord is NOT a political forum. We only comment on politics as it relates to our spiritual concerns. We have not offered a political preference on this blog site. Continue reading

5 Ways To Cope With Election Anxiety

election-stress-disorder-voting

Now there’s another disorder. Election stress disorder. Dr. Asim Shah, vice chair for community psychiatry at Baylor College of medicine in Houston, says it’s real.

Apparently Shah is right. A quick Google search of “election stress disorder” revealed 1,540,000 hits.

Shah said that symptoms of this once-every-four-years disorder include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping and a sinking or doomed feeling.

According to recent news reports The American Psychological Association says the election is the source of “a significant amount of stress for more than half of all Americans and is prevalent in both parties.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Election

BlueButton

Tomorrow in the United States is election day. Our nation selects a new President. The polls have been all over the map. Some favor Clinton. Others favor Trump. Some say the race is too close to call.  And still others are predicting a landslide victory for Clinton. Or Trump.  Depending on who you listen to.

In so many obvious ways this election has been unusual and unprecedented. Because of their drastically differing views, background and temperament, some have opined that this election is one of the most important in our history

While much has been discussed and written about the candidates and the importance of our vote tomorrow, much of it in vitriolic language, ThePreachersWord believes a few rational, balanced, Biblical thoughts are in order. Here’s my view. Continue reading

Three Challenges To Commitment

Jesus.Follow

In 1964 there arose a confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia. A group of Gurkhas from Nepal were asked if they would be willing to jump from transport planes into combat if needed. Since they had never been trained as paratroopers, the Gurkhas had the right to refuse.

While usually very agreeable, they first refused. However, the next day, they reconsidered and told the British officer who had asked them that they would jump under these conditions: The ground was marshy or reasonably soft with no rocky outcrops and they wanted the plane to fly as slowly as possible at no more that 100 feet high. God Told Me to Quit Cussing

philippine-president

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s whose profanities have become a trademark of his political persona, claims God spoke directly to him and ordered him to quit cussing.

Since taking office at the end of June, Duterte has threatened to kill drug dealers, questioned the pope’s heritage with an expletive, and told President Obama where he could go. And it wasn’t heaven! Continue reading
