Word of the Week: Gospel

Bible.Cross.2This week I will be writing my posts from Trenton, Florida.  I’m in a gospel meeting with the Trenton church of Christ.  It is especially sweet since Trenton is Norma Jean’s home town.  So, she is enjoying seeing her relatives and reconnecting with old friends.

I love coming to Gilchrist county.  It’s a joy to preach the gospel here.  They turn out for Gospel Meetings from all the other churches in the county.  And they are very supportive and encouraging of gospel preaching.

As I reflect on preaching here, I am reminded of an old saying about the gospel by a 19th century preacher, Walter Scott.   Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Righteousness

They started whining. The father decided to use spirituality to deal with the situation. Word of the Week: Majesty

Beautiful.  Incredible.  Gorgeous.  Awesome. Amazing. Majestic.  These and other descriptive words were exchanged by Norma Jean and me as we enjoyed our trip to the Rocky Mountains last week.

From the Vail Valley to Independence Pass.  From Breckenridge to Aspen.  From Beaver Creek to Piney River.  It was one awe-inspiring, breath-taking, God-affirming sight after another. Continue reading →

WORD OF THE WEEK: PURPOSE

The Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.”   It is called  “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.”

The Temple’s inspiration was supposedly based on the great love the Moguel emperor Shah Jahn had for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.  When she died he was devastated.  Grief stricken, he ordered this edifice erected as her final resting place.  No expense would be spared in honoring his beloved.  Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Repent

Rick Stacy, a Michigan preacher, tells a neat story about a man named Ken Bailey.

Ken was a laborer on the Alaska Pipeline back in the mid 1970’s. He worked a year and came back with $30,000. That was a lot of money 30 years ago! He blew it all in a month.

He went back and in six months made another $18,000. He came home again and this time he decided to visit the church where Rick preached. Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Peace

Peace.Mind.Sunset

Do you remember Tracy Lippard, the tall, beautiful, blond, beauty queen from West Virginia?  She was dubbed by the media “the psycho-Barbie doll gone bad.”

After crowning her successor, she drove 275 miles seeking revenge against her boy friend who had jilted her for another woman, Melissa Weikle. She took with her a 9-mm semi-automatic pistol.   A butcher knife.   Rubber gloves.   A bottle of lighter fluid.   And a hammer. Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Love

Love.1Cor13Several years ago I heard a story about a psychology professor who believed that parents should not punish or spank their children.  His motto: ”Just love your children.

Although he had no children of his own, whenever he saw a neighbor scolding a child for some wrongdoing, he would say, “You should love your boy, not punish him.” Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Integrity

Plants

There is an ancient fable of  an Emperor from China who had no children and needed to choose a successor.

Thousands of children from across the kingdom were called to the palace and were shocked when the Emperor exclaimed, “I have decided to choose one of you.”

“I am going to give each one of you a seed today. One very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!” Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Encourage

Robinson.Reese

 This year is the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color-barrier to become the first African-American to play Major league baseball.   The release of the move “42″ and other MLB events have paid tribute to Robinson’s achievements.

His first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers was brutal.  Jackie faced hatred nearly everywhere he traveled. Pitchers threw fastballs at his head. Runners spiked him on the bases.  Ugly insults were hurled from the stands.  And opposing dugouts.  Even the home crowds in Brooklyn taunted him at times. Continue reading →
