Do You Know What Today Is?

A man was reading the newspaper early one morning at the breakfast table. His wife came over to him and patted him on the shoulder. She looked at him, smiled, and said, “I bet you don’t know what today is, do you?”

He looked at her and said, “Of course I know what day it is!” and went back to reading his paper. He didn’t have a clue but was afraid he would upset his wife since she was really sensitive about special occasions.

He thought to himself, “Is it her birthday? That must be it.” So after he got to work he called the florist and had a bouquet of white roses sent to his wife. Continue reading

God Gave You This Day

Today is National Banana Split Day.

According to the National Day Calendar of unusual and little known holidays, the banana split was not created in an ice cream parlor, but in a pharmacy in 1904. It was the brainchild of David Evans Strickler, a pharmacist’s apprentice, who enjoyed experimenting with soda fountain sundaes in his free time.

The banana split was so popular that college students paid 10 cents, double the price of a normal sundae.

Do You Know What Today Is?

Did you know that today is National Banana Cream Pie Day?

According to the most comprehensive list of unusual special days, there are 2,346 such National Days and Observances. That’s pretty good for only 365 days a year.

So today is also National Speech and Debate Education Day. National Employee Appreciation Day. National Dress in Blue Day. National Old Stuff Day.

You’re Making History Today!

History.ThisDay

On this day in history, 50 years ago, Jim Ryun became the first High School athlete to run a sub-4 minute mile. I wrote about it Monday in my “Word of the Week” column on endurance.  It occurred to me, however, that I might be in the minority that finds his feat very important!

Just For Today

RAINBOW

An important word in the Bible is “today.”  “Today if you will hear his voice…”( Heb. 4:17). “Exhort one another daily, while it is called today…” (Heb. 3:13).

Today is important, because it is the only day we have.

One of my favorite authors, anonymous, wrote, “Yesterday is but a dream, Tomorrow is only a vision. But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”
