Do We Need To Amend The Bible?

queen-james-gay-bibleWith the activities of the holiday season, I’m a little behind on the news. Did you hear this?

I just read about an interview that CNN host Piers Morgan conducted with author and preacher Rick Warren on Christmas Eve. While discussing the issue of same-sex marriage, Morgan argued that there needs to be an “amendment to the Bible.” “Both the Bible and the Constitution were well-intentioned, Morgan told Warren, “but they are basically inherently flawed. Hence the need to amend it.” Continue reading

Why Did God Allow The Newtown Shooting?

Connecticut School ShootingIn wake of the tragic and senseless shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT there have been more questions than answers  We want to know how this could happen?  What kind of person shoots little children?  What was the shooter, Adam Lanza’s,  motive?  His background?  His mental state?  Why did his mother, Nancy, keep a cache of weapons in the house? And what set Lanza on the tragic path to kill his mother, 20 children, 6 adults and finally himself? Continue reading

What Drives You?

Popular author, Rick Warren writes, “Everyone’s life is driven by something. Most dictionaries define the verb drive as “to guide, to control, or to direct.” Whether you are driving a car, a nail, or a golf ball, you are guiding, controlling, and directing it at that moment. What is the driving force in your life?” Continue reading

Character Counts

As I click the “publish” button to send this post off around the world, Norma Jean and I are on the way to the airport.  We’re heading to Ohio.  This week-end I’ll be spending time with a group of Christian men in a retreat.  We’ll eat. Laugh. Swap stories.  Enjoy great fellowship.  And we’ll sit around the fire and discuss our theme “The Character of a Man.”  I’m grateful to Dan DeGarmo and Matt Allen for the privilege of leading the devotional periods.  Continue reading

President Obama Supports Same Sex Marriage

My blog on Tuesday, “Is Morality Evolving,” is already partially outdated. (If you haven’t seen it, read it first. https://thepreachersword.com/2012/05/08/is-morality-evolving/)

I stated what President Obama has repeatedly said over the past three years that his view of same-sex marriage is “evolving.” On Wednesday his evolution was fully completed. The President has “come out” and said that he now favors same-sex marriage. In a quickly called news conference the President said, “At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” Continue reading

Mercy!

“Mercy!’ is an expression sometimes used by people to indicate great emotion.  I’ve heard folks say, “Mercy, Me!”  But mercy is one of great spiritual qualities we need to understand and apply in our lives. Continue reading

What’s Your Purpose in Life?

Have you ever spent time walking through old cemeteries reading the epithets on the tombstones? They’re interesting.

I read of a man who came across an epithet that read: “Remember Friend, as you walk by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you must be; so prepare for death to follow me.” He felt something was missing so he added the words “To follow you I might consent, if I only knew which way you went!” Continue reading
