Word of the Week: Discipline

A stunt pilot was selling rides in his single engine airplane. There was only room for the pilot and two passengers. A preacher wanted to try it, but also take his wife along at no extra charge.

At first the pilot wouldn’t agree. But not wanting to miss out on a chance to make some cash, the pilot said, “I’ll take you both up for the price of one if you promise not to utter a sound during the entire flight. If you make any noise, the price is doubled.” The preacher agreed. Continue reading

Are You Getting Enough Exercise?

Exercise.BallAbout three weeks ago I experienced some lower back problems.  Again!  Since moving I had neglected regular visits to the Chiropractor.  Now I was paying the price.  Fortunately, through the recommendation of a friend I’ve found a good Doctor and am receiving excellent treatments.

But I learned something that surprised me.  I was asked to sit on an exercise ball.  Hold my foot off the ground for 30 seconds.  I could only do it for 5 seconds!  The Doc said the muscles that control my balance were weak.  He pointed out that often when we work-out we think of aerobic exercise or weight training, but neglect the core.  The weakness of those muscles will affect my back!  And have an impact on his adjustments holding. One Quality for Success You Can’t Do Without

self.disciplineSunday evening Norma Jean and I were invited to join the young people of the Eastside church in Baytown, Texas, where I’m holding a meeting, for their monthly devotion.  Following the food, fellowship and singing,  I was asked to share a few thoughts.  It’s always fun to be part of youth activities.  I love their enthusiasm.  Their energy.  Their excitement.  Not just for life.  But for spiritual matters.

So, what would I share with them?  I decided that if I only had one chance to encourage them, there is a topic that will impact every area of their lives.  Their school work.  Their social activities.  Their relationships.  Their spiritual growth.  Their morality.  Their succeess or failure in life.    And it will help you too.  Young or old.  Here it is. Do We Care Enough To Correct?

George Bernard Shaw once said, “The worse sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them.  That’s the essence of inhumanity.”  Shaw’s words ring true when you consider  the Bible teaching about our relationships with one another.

Jesus taught the ”Golden Rule” to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matt. 7:12).  He told the parable of the Good Samaritan when a critic seeking to entrap him asked, “Who is my neighbor?”  The Samaritan was good because he cared about a fellow human being that was bruised and beaten.
