Word of the Week: Praise

PraiseTheLord.Sunset

This story is “as old as dirt” but I still like it!

A man visited a church one Sunday that was a more formal and  liturgical church than he was used to attending. The church was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. That made it all the more obvious when this fellow got excited during the preacher’s sermon and shouted out “Praise the Lord!” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! He Gave It Up To Rise Up!

The Bible

Surrender is a bad word today.

Surrender means losing. Quitting. Failing. It evokes images of a soldier “raising the white flag.” Of a boxer” throwing in the towel.” Or a wrestler “Tapping out.”

Surrender is negative. It is yielding to an opponent. Admitting defeat. Or forfeiting the contest. Continue reading

“Hang in There:” In Memory of My Dad, Roy C. Weliever

Dad.RoyWeliever

I’ll never forget that day. It was a Thursday. April 21. 1994.

Kent Heaton came to take me to the airport. Dad and I were sitting in the sun room of the nursing home. I turned and said, “Dad, I’ve got to go home now. I’ve got a meeting that starts Sunday in Smyrna, TN. Anything you want to tell Norma and the kids?” Continue reading

Ingredients for a Tasty Life!

Taste.The.Lord

“100 Places To Eat Before You Die” shouted the internet headline! I like to eat, so I read to see what I had been missing! Fortunately, one is right here in Kansas City, Oklahoma Joe’s. It’s bar-b-que. And it’s really good!

I got to thinking how much focus America puts on food. We love to eat! And we love to eat out.   We love our burgers and fries. Steaks and seafood. And chicken fixed a 100 different ways.    Continue reading

The Preacher’s Perspective on Earth Day

earth-day-2014

When we lived in Manatee County Florida, the Soil Conservation Department invited the area preachers on a tour of the county every Spring.

Most years I attended. I grew up on a farm and enjoyed seeing the local agriculture. The tour was interesting. Plus at noon they fed us a steak dinner with all the trimmings. Hmm, my mind’s a little foggy now, but maybe the steak dinner was the big draw. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Know

Jesus.Hugging

Men, suppose you are having one of those intense conversations with your wife. There is some area of disagreement. Dissension. Or at least, misunderstanding.   So, she says to you, as she rolls her eyes, in a voice of exasperation, “You‘t don’t even know me!”

What if my wife said that to me, and I responded this way? Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! What’s Good About “Good Friday”?

Good-Friday-on-Cross

My calendar says today is “Good Friday.” The NYSE will be closed for “Good Friday.” Many schools will out for “Good Friday.” Christendom celebrates today as “Good Friday.”

Personally, I’ve always thought speaking of the day Jesus was unmercifully crucified on Calvary as “Good Friday” seemed a little strange. Of course, the expression “Good Friday is not used in the Bible. So, what is its origin? Continue reading

Can You Earn a Place in Heaven?

bloomberg

Country music artist, Alan Jackson, had a #1 hit song back in 2001 entitled “Where I Come From.” The refrain repeats these lyrics:

I said where I come from

It’s cornbread and chicken

Where I come from a lotta front porch sittin’

Where I come from tryin’ to make a livin’

And workin’ hard to get to heaven

Where I come from Continue reading

HEAVEN IS FOR REAL

Heaven.4.Real

“Heaven is for Real” is a movie being released today in a theater near you! It’s the continuing trend of movies that Hollywood is producing to appeal to the “Christian market.”

The movie is based on the story of a 4-year old boy, Colton Burpo, who almost died on the operating table during emergency surgery. When he recovered, Colton claims that he went to heaven. Saw his own surgery. Observed the prayers of his anguished parents. And met Jesus. Continue reading

Should Christians Refuse To Pay Taxes?

Taxes

More Americans are upset about government waste and spending.  Businesses with a Christian world view are suing to opt out of Obama-care.  Christians are increasingly questioning not only the misuse of their tax money, but the moral abuse.   Continue reading
